10 Commandments for Neck Lift Recovery

A neck lift is a form neck contouring surgery . It is a procedure which lifts and tightens the skin of your neck. It helps to prevent a “turkey neck” by getting rid of any excess skin, and smooths out wrinkles and creases. As long as you maintain a stable weight, the results should be permanent.

Both the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons  and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons  give an in-depth, step by step guide of what you can expect to happen both during the procedure and after.

But the question is, what can you do to aid your recovery?

1. If you are sent home the same day, have a responsible adult stay with you for the first night.

2. Help reduce swelling by keeping your head up – keep your head raised for the first few days after surgery by sleeping with a few extra pillows.

3. Keep your wound clean, and get any potential infection checked out straight away.

4. Do not put ice on your neck. This can cause skin death by compromising blood flow.

5. Like with all surgeries, you should not do any heavy lifting for several weeks.

6. Avoid having sex or bending over for at least two weeks after surgery.

7. Maintain a level of exercise after surgery, but start off small and slow.

8. Maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery, which includes avoiding nicotine and other drugs. This will help your body heal quicker and prevent your skin from stretching by putting on weight.

9. Do not drive until you feel safe to do so. Wearing a seat belt might be uncomfortable to begin with.

10. Make sure you return for your follow up care. This will ensure that everything is as it should be and that the wound is healing nicely.

There are many mistakes to be made when recovering from any kind of medical procedure, but as long as you are eating and drinking properly, getting enough rest, and not doing more than you should, your recovery should be a smooth process.

If you ever feel like something isn’t right, either in yourself or with the outcome of the neck lift, go back to your doctor so that they can talk through what you are feeling. If there are any problems that have arisen, they will want to address them straight away.
