You use it every day. You make sure to always have it and you probably feel a little gross without it. But do you ever stop to think about your toothpaste? What it is made of, who invented it, and where it comes from?

While you may think of your toothpaste as a boring necessity, that small tube of paste has had a pretty interesting history. If you love learning cool tidbits or are just really into toothpaste, here are several facts about toothpaste that you probably didn’t know.

  1. Ancient Toothpowder Was Made From Interesting Ingredients

One of the fun facts about toothpaste is what it was made of in ancient times.

Your toothpowder could have been made of a variety of ingredients, such as burnt eggshells, crushed bones, herbs, oyster shells, and crushed rock salt. However, probably the most interesting ingredient was urine. Up until the 18th century, urine was added to toothpowder because ammonia was thought to clean and whiten teeth.

  1. Edible Toothpaste Created for Astronauts

If you’ve ever purchased edible toothpaste, you can thank the astronauts for the invention. Since space is weightless, astronauts had to swallow their toothpaste after brushing their teeth. This eventually led to the invention of edible toothpaste.

  1. Toothpaste Can Attract Bears

Bears are notorious for raiding campgrounds and houses for food, but did you know they’ll also steal toothpaste? Bears like anything that smells like food, and to a bear, your toothpaste smells like a delicious treat. When you are camping, make sure to store away your toothpaste, just as you do with your food.

  1. Toothpaste Is Relatively New

Although people have been cleaning their teeth since ancient times, toothpaste is relatively new.

Before toothpaste, everyone used toothpowder to clean their teeth. In 1854, a dentist named Dr. Peabody added soap to toothpowder to create a paste. However, it wasn’t until 1873 that Colgate produced toothpaste in a jar for people to purchase.

  1. You Can Buy Gluten-Free Toothpaste

If you are allergic or sensitive to gluten, you can purchase gluten-free toothpaste. This is important because many people will experience painful side-effects when using products that are not gluten-free, including toothpaste.

Fortunately, gluten-free toothpaste is becoming more and more common and can likely be found at your local drugstore.

  1. Toothpaste Has Many Uses

One of the many cool facts about toothpaste is that it has many uses other than preventing cavities or a Root Canal. Toothpaste is great for removing stains, polishing silver, and removing crayon from your walls. Toothpaste can even dry out acne and reduce itching from bug bites.
