There are many horror stories about women ruining their hair and developing bald spots because of hair extensions. So it’s no surprise that with so much negative information, many people doubt whether this kind of hair treatment is worth the investment. Thankfully, no one can deny that when they are done right, this type of hair product can make you look amazing.

However, good extensions aren’t cheap; they will cost you between $100 and $800 on average. The following facts should help you decided if getting hair extensions is right for you:

Not All Hair Extensions Are Damaging

The most important thing you need to understand is that there are many types of hair extensions. It’s true that some of them damage your hair at least a little. However, some of these products are completely safe.

The riskiest types are “permanent” extensions. You can wear those for up to three or even four months. However, it’s usually recommended to remove them every eight weeks.

Among these types are weave or sew-in hair extensions that are good for people with thick hair. You can wear a weave for up to eight weeks before redoing it. The risk comes from the fact that the weaving method pulls your natural hair tight on the scalp. This affects circulation and creates the risk of hair loss.

It’s similar with microlink or microbead extensions. They can last for up to four months, but if they are too tight, you also risk losing your natural hair in large batches. Note that this type is also the most expensive. Depending on the salon and number of extensions, it can cost $1,000 or more.

However, there are also options that aren’t dangerous for your natural hair at all, such as more affordable clip-in hair extensions. You can easily apply them yourself with little effort, as well as remove and reapply as necessary. If cared for properly, these extensions can last for over four weeks. It might be longer if you only use them occasionally. As they are literally clips, they don’t do any permanent damage to hairs or scalp.

The in-between option is tape extensions, which can be very safe and last longer than clip-ins. These extensions are attached to your hair using an adhesive. However, this is where the risk lies. While some types of adhesive are safe, others require the use of heat to bond with your hair. As extreme heat is dangerous, those should be avoided if you don’t want to damage your hair.

Hair Extensions Aren’t That Hard to Care For

Many people have doubts about investing money in hair extensions because they think those would require special care. In part, this is true. However, you won’t have to spend any extra on high-end haircare products. In fact, you can stick to the same shampoo, conditioner, and styling products you used before the extensions.

The care should be applied to how you use them. This means that you’ll need to be extremely gentle so as not to damage the parts where the extension bonds to your locks. You should also wash your hair in lukewarm water only and avoid high heat settings when styling your “new” locks.

High-quality extensions available today don’t require any special treatments beyond this. Of course, each type is unique, so you’ll need to consult your stylist about how to maintain them properly. However, you shouldn’t have to spend any extra money on specialized products.

Extensions Can Give You Your Dream Hairstyle

The most important benefit of hair extensions, the one that makes them worth the money, is that they can transform your hairstyle. Sadly, not everyone has an opportunity to have long voluminous locks naturally.

However, with this simple hairstyle treatment, you’ll be able to have the tresses you’ve always dreamed of. What’s better, this won’t be a truly permanent change. Therefore, you will be able to go back and forth between different styles depending on your mood. And you won’t have to wait for months on end for your hair to grow out just to cut it and start all over again.

Simply put, extensions allow you a lot of flexibility with your hairstyle. But it’s only you who can decide whether this freedom is worth the cost. Considering the versatility of available options, the answer is most likely “yes”.
