Meet Brandon — A Dapper Guy On A Budget
Posted 261 days ago by Amanda Raye
Here’s some more evidence that you don’t have to have a celebrity’s credit card to look dapper. Meet Brandon, a graphic designer at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art located in Richmond. He’s a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and loves art, fashion and anything beautiful.

Broke & Chic: What got you interested in fashion?
Brandon: My freshmen year roommate and his awesome self. Until we met in ’01, I had never come across such a well-dressed black guy, someone who seemed to actually care more than the average person about how he presented himself, and who wore clothes that actually fit him and showed the definition of his figure.
B&C: What’s one trend you can’t stand?
B: The polo shirt/khaki shorts/flip-flop combo. I’m sorry “bro”, but please step it up a notch.
Brandon…the Broke & Chic team so agrees with you on this one!

B&C: What are your go-to stores and why?
B: Target and American Apparel for t-shirts, the first for their assortment of Marvel Comics and Star Wars shirts, the latter for their always vibrant color selection. Urban Outfitters for a lot of dress shirts and hoodies, but mainly jeans because again, color selection. Need Supply for shoes because the quality is always, always outstanding.
B&C: Where do you get your style inspiration?
B: Anywhere from various fashion sites to manga and movies.
B&C: How would you describe your style?
B: On point.
B&C: Has your style changed/evolved over time?
B: YES. I went from baggy jeans and XL Fubu shirts and polos based on a close-minded high school mentality of wanting to fit in, to clothing that fit me, and actually reflected more of my personality and taste. I also used to have a closet of nothing but black and blue, but now I’m all about colors and it’s awesome.

Broke Fashion: Meet Chris Visions — You’re Gonna Love This Guy!
Posted 286 days ago by Amanda Raye
Meet Chris Visions! Chris is a talented and fashionable illustrator living and working in Richmond, Virginia. He’s an artist through and through and is currently working with RVA Magazine. When he’s not creating something awesome for the magazine he’s either advertising in Richmond or working on comic projects!

- Shirt: $9 Fantastic Thrift
- Khaki Pants: $20 Target
- Vans: a hand-me-down from a friend
- Bowtie: $3 Bygones Vintage
Chris is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and has since been featured in the Society of Illustrators student show (NYC), He has worked for a number of clients such as Radical Comics, Mariner Media Inc., and Stain Glass Llama Inc. He is also involved in projects such as the RVAnthology, a local comic book collaboration with fellow artists in Richmond, and showing in local gallery’s.

To keep up with Chris Visions, make sure you follow his Twitter, Tumblr and website!
Broke & Chic: What got you interested in fashion?
It started with trying to put together Michael Jackson’s outfits as a kid. Seeing a black guy rocking so many fly jackets had me yearning for more than hand-me-downs as a kid.

- Shirt: $19 Target
- Jeans: $20 Target
- Hi-Top Nike’s: $12 Rumors
B&C: What’s one trend you can’t stand?
Gaudy, poorly designed, comic book themed attire. I just CAN’T stand it. The Bat Symbol looks great without paint splatters and tribal marks, trust me people.
B&C: What are your go-to stores to shop at and why?
I really like Rumors and other thrift stores because they’re full of surprises. There’s a bit of “history” that lingers in places like that and all my favorite items of clothing have been picked up from places like that.

- Shirt: $5 Fantastic Thrift
- Khaki Pants: $20 Target
- Vans: a hand-me-down from a friend
- Bowtie: $3 Bygones Vintage
B&C: Where do you get your style inspiration?
I’m finding new places to pull my fashion from everyday! Fashion seemed really unattainable to me as a kid cause I was poor and thought it took too much money to get “the cool clothes”. All the kids who were well off rocked $300 JNCO’s, so I decided to not concern myself with that too much. But as I grew older I just surrounded myself with bits of nostalgia, things that made me happy as a kid: plaid, nice comic book tees, chuck taylors, bowties, thick rim glasses, stylin’ socks and so on.
B&C: How would you describe your style?
I lean towards a playful but classy approach. I like what I’m wearing to be graphic, to pop like an icon. I’m still tweaking it everyday. My bowtie game is getting strong, and I really like them because they harken back to an era of icons.

B&C: Has your style changed/evolved over time?
Definitely. I’ve taken my style more by the reigns, especially after meeting my girlfriend. Her style is so unique, it kinda called me out to step up my game! You gotta come correct standing beside that lady!

Broke Fashion in Richmond, Virginia
Posted 304 days ago by Amanda Raye
Over 4th of July weekend, Broke & Chic ventured down south to Richmond, Virginia. The home of Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, Philip Morris and Need Supply Co.
While there, Richmond was going through an extreme heat wave with a daily temperature of 102°. Despite the heat, Broke & Chic was able to find quite a few fashionable people. I don’t know about you, but when it’s overly hot and humid outside, I don’t even want to leave the house! I give these fashion-forward people so much credit for going the extra mile.

- Dress: $40.00 Ebay (dyed it herself)
- Shoes: $135.00 Camper
- Necklace: Homemade

Dress: $189.00 Glass Boat

- Shirt: $14.95 H&M
- Jeans: $49.95 H&M
- Shoes: $150 Aldo

Out of the bunch, who was your favorite fashion-forward southerner?
Broke Fashion: Meet Mariah — A Girl Who Loves All Things Vintage
Posted 306 days ago by Amanda Raye
Meet Mariah! She’s a fashionista based in Jersey City, New Jersey who loves all things vintage.
Broke & Chic: Tell us a little about yourself and your style.
I love all things vintage! I also love mixing my favorite fashion eras which is sort of what I did here (mixing an old classic hairstyle with an 80′s inspired outfit).

Broke & Chic: Where do you get your style inspiration?
Thrift stores are my inspiration! I collect vintage statement pieces and build wearable outfits around them. Not only do I save a ton of money, but I also travel back in time through the wonderful treasures that can only be found at a thrift store. SO much fun!
