Good, Clean Fun: 4 Things to Do Instead of Drinking

When someone develops a substance addiction, it can be hard to think of much else. When will you be able to get your next drink? How do you hide your substance abuse? 

It becomes a full-time responsibility to keep up the addiction. But getting sober doesn’t mean you have to live a boring life. When you read more about treatment, you’ll find there’s more to life than your addiction. But what happens when you start trying to get clean? Here are some fun ideas to start your sober life:

  1. Choose a Hobby 

One of the things to remember about keeping your mind off drinking is to keep yourself busy. And the best way to do that is to also keep your hands busy. Hobbies are some of the greatest ways to start enjoying your life. They give you something to look forward to, and something they’re often rewarding.

Hobbies to pick up can include gardening and landscaping, or even painting your house. Or you might enjoy puzzles, collecting items, and knitting. The choices are endless for anyone who’s ready to dive head first.

  1. Get Your Body Moving  

There’s nothing better for you than to get your heart rate up and your body moving. That’s why exercise is such a great way to learn how to be happy after opiate addiction. 

The reason is that exercise releases a chemical called endorphins into your system. These chemicals create a happy and healthy feeling in the brain. But exercise also gives you self-confidence that will help you avoid addiction.  

  1. Make Sober Friends 

When you become sober, you’ll likely notice how many of your friends are still your “party” friends. 

If you’re serious about staying sober, it’s time to start making new friends. Friendships that don’t center around drugs and alcohol will be much healthier for you. 

You can join a book club, or even start volunteering with organizations. You could even invite someone from a fitness class to grab dinner and a movie. 

  1. Sign Up for Workshops or Classes 

You’re already trying to improve your life by getting sober. Why not take it a step further and start learning again? Signing up for classes at your local college is a great way to further your learning and make friends. It will also keep your mind busy, as suggested above. 

If you’re not looking for a longer commitment, why not try workshops? Workshops are even better for learning more about a specific hobby you enjoy. Novel writing, poetry, or even computer workshops will be wonderful to get you out again.
