8 Cheaper Alternatives to Urban Decay’s Naked Palette

Posted 1 year ago by

The Naked Palette from Urban Decay is by far my favorite eyeshadow palette…ever! Before my knowledge of its existence, I had dozens and dozens of different eyeshadows. When I finally gave in and splurged on it…I was able to give all my other eyeshadows away. I simply didn’t need them anymore. This palette literally has everything you need.

From a simple look using this palette’s Half Baked and Smog colors, all the way to a dramatic smokey eye using Creep and Hustle…the Naked Palette has my back. Unfortunately, it’s pricey. Lately I’ve been wondering what I’m going to do when it’s all gone. Will I just replace it? Or will I try to find a cheaper option?

Instead of waiting to find out, I’ve decided to give a few Naked Palette wannabes a try, and to my surprise…I was quite happy. Below are my findings:

1. Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Palette

The Physician Formula Shimmer Strips Palette in Warm Nude is a great alternative to the Naked Palette. The shadow goes on smoothly and the colors are very similar. The only downfall is this palette doesn’t include any black shadow, so you’ll have to purchase a few more shadows if you’re craving a strong smokey eye.

2. Sephora’s Primal Instincts Eyeshadow Palette

This palette has all the Naked favorites (Virgin, Sin, Sidecar, Half Baked and Creep) with a few added purple tones. It’s still on the pricey side ($28), but it’s still way cheaper than the original.

3. e.l.f. Studio Palette in Natural

Why does e.l.f. have to be amazing all the time? This palette features similar colors as Naked, with a ton of other tones as well. The best part? It’s only $6.00!

4. Hard Candy Top Ten Palette in Neutrals

The Hard Candy neutral palette has all the warmth and gold Naked has. Downfall…no blacks, again. Just make sure you use an eyelid primer with this palette, otherwise it won’t last all day.

5. Mark Eyeshadow Palette in Neutral

Don’t really use the blacks in the Naked Palette anyway? This palette is all you need!

6. Inglot Custom Palette

Inglot is an affordable luxury makeup company from Europe. They’re known for their bold and vibrant colors, but what sets them apart from other makeup lines is they have a feature in their stores where you can design your own palette! I love my Naked Palette, but I’ve never used three of the shadows that come with it.

With Inglot, you can re-create the Naked Palette, including only the colors you’ll actually use. Take a look at their locations to find a store near you. Depending on the amount of colors you choose, the price should stay under $40.

7. the Balm Nude’tude Palette

The Nude’tude Palette  from the Balm is just as high-end as Urban Decay with similar colors as Naked for about $14.00 less!

8. NYX Nude on Nude Palette

This is another great palette that compares to Naked. It even comes with ten lip colors!

6 Sexy Lip Colors to Try This Summer

Posted 2 years ago by

Makeup in the summer can be tricky. It’s hot and humid, and so the second you leave the house you begin to sweat. If you do decide to wear makeup, you’ll slowly sweat it off as the day progresses — this can (somewhat) be prevented, just follow our tips. But sometimes, even the best mascaras, eyeshadows and eyeliners smudge due to excess perspiration.

To still look lovely in the heat, we have a trick: play up your lips instead of your eyes. After all, your lips don’t have sweat glands!

Below are 6 fabulous lip colors that are perfect for high heat and humidity:

1. Barbie Pink

If you want barbie pink lips, now’s the time to do it. It’s flirty, fun and very beach friendly! Cathryn is wearing a Barbie Pink lip stain from eyes.lips.face called Birthday Suit. We really like this specific one because it isn’t creamy. Creamy lip color is a huge no-no in the summer since it’ll melt right off.

2. Nude

If you’ve always been a fan of Kim Kardashian’s signature nude lips then you’re in luck. The Kardashian sisters launched their very own makeup line called Khroma not too long ago. (note: it will be called Kardashian Beauty later this year)

Their Au Naturel In The Nude lip set is the perfect nude lip color for a variety of skin tones and it’ll make your summer glow stand out even more!

3. Rose

Not a fan of pink or nude? Then perhaps a pale rose gloss will do since it’s simple and adds just enough color. Cathryn is wearing an iridescent gloss by Youngblood Cosmetics called Siren.

4. Fashion Fuschia

Want a vibrant pop without the commitment? This balm stain by Revlon in Sweetheart Valentine  will be your new best friend then. It’s a gel formula meaning it moisturizes and stains. Most lip stains out there don’t offer any form of moisturization, so if you suffer from chronic chapped lips, this lip stain is for you. The best part is it lasts for hours!

5. Mauve

Mauve is the perfect everyday lip color since it pairs well with most outfits and it’s never overpowering.

I’m wearing the Maybelline Color Whispers lip color in Made It Mauve. It goes on like a chapstick so it’s extremely moisturizing without being too creamy and it’ll make your lips softer if you use it daily. It personally reminds me of the Clinque Chubby Sticks for half the price.

6. Plum

Most people consider plum to be a fall color but I personally think a bold plum lip stain on a hot summer night is not only daring, but fun too! Besides, purple lipgloss is starting to become popular. Below I’m wearing Maybelline’s 10 Hour Stain Gloss in Pleasing Plum.

First, make sure your lips are moisturized. I recommend exfoliating them the night before and going to sleep with either Vaseline or cocoa butter on them. Once your lips are properly moisturized, continue layering on the stain until it’s at your desired intensity. Wait about 30 seconds between each layer. I have four layers on below.

Money saving tip: Instead of buying each of your friends a gift, do a Secret Santa with your group. That way you’ll be able to give one friend you care about a quality gift that’s $30 or less. Otherwise, you’ll end up spending a fortune buying all of your friends cheap gifts that they’ll most likely never use.

New to Makeup?

Posted 4 years ago by

Makeup can be a scary thing if you haven’t had much experience. It doesn’t matter if you’re 13 or 50. It’s never to late to learn the ropes. Just remember, makeup isn’t beauty. It’s just another way to express yourself!

Below are my beginner’s recommendations (that are low cost) to get you started on your first makeup kit. Once you know what you like, you can invest in something more expensive. The more money you spend the longer it lasts. So if you decide you don’t like bronzer, “throwing” away $2 sounds better than say $30.

Urban Decay: Is an American cosmetics company from California. It’s primarily sold in mid to high-end beauty stores, such as Ulta and Sephora. I love them for their highly pigmented eye shadows and eyelid primers. It’s definitely rock star makeup! Unfortunately, it’s $18 per individual eyeshadow, so I recommend going with one of their palettes. The Naked Palette for $48 has every neutral color you’ll ever need. If you want the bright colors go with the Sustainable Shadow Box for $36. They are also 100% “cruelty-free!”

Eyes Lips Face: Also known as e.l.f. Cosmetics,  is an international cosmetics brand based in New York City. All of their products are under $5, making them my favorite cosmetics company out there. I’m in love with their $5 eyeshadow palettes, $1 eyeliner pens, $1 mascaras, $1 bronzers, and their $1 eyelid primers. They are also 100% “cruelty-free.” You can find e.l.f. at Target, Kmart, Walmart, Dollar General, and of course on-line.

Rimmel London: Is a British based Cosmetic company that has some of the best mascaras I have ever used. My favorite is the Sexy Curves Mascara in Extreme Black ($7). I’m also in love with their 60 Second Nail Polish($3). It really does dry in about a minuet. Find Rimmel at Target, CVS and Walmart.

Sally Girl: Is a cosmetics brand sold within Sally Beauty Supply stores. I’ve become a huge fan of their eye shadows and mini lipsticks ($1.) You can find these products only at Sally Beauty Supply stores. Click Here to find the location nearest you.

New York Color: Also known as N.Y.C, has many different types of cosmetics: eyeshadow, foundation, bronzer, blush, eyeliner, nail polish, mascara… I’m personally in love with their lipsticks, which are never over $2. Go to their website to find locations.

Wet ‘n’ Wild: Is another low-cost cosmetic brand found in many locations. Their products are usually under $8. I love the Mega Eyes Defining Marker ($4.99.) Go to their website to find a location nearest you.

Take about an hour and just apply and remove until you learn what you like! It helps to rip a few pages out of a magazine of a model/celeb sporting a look you love so you’ll have something to follow.

Looking for Coverage?

The first step to finding the perfect shade of foundation, concealer, or powder is to see a professional. There’s no way to try on cheaper brands (Almay, L’Oreal, Cover Girl), so splurging at a makeup counter your first time will help you find the right match — plus you’ll learn the skill of applying it! I highly recommend M.A.C, Clinique and Bobbi Brown. Trust me, it’s definitely worth the upfront cost! As a makeup artist, I constantly see girls wearing the wrong shade of foundation. After learning the tone and shade your skin needs, it’ll be easy to pick out a cheaper alternative of your own! My favorite being L’Oreal True Match. They make it very easy to find your shade!

Need more help?

I highly recommend Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro ($32). Her book is easy to understand and follow, plus It’s filled with step by step instructions and great tips. Also check out MAKEUP.COM and Allure Magazine.

Here’s Why e.l.f. Makeup is Amazing

Posted 4 years ago by

There’s no way around it. e.l.f. (eyes lips face) makeup is my number one cheap makeup company so far. Most of the items are only $5.00 or less, and I’m madly in love with e.l.f.’s Waterproof Eyeliner Pen.

Why? It’s so much better than the usual kohl liner, and it dries immediately, unlike liquid eyeliner. Plus, it’s only $1.00 and easily draws a straight line!

I have found it at target, the dollar store, and the official website.  Wet and Wild has something similar, but it’s $4.99 and it doesn’t last as long. Best of all: e.l.f. makeup is 100% cruelty free.
