Crazy Things Celebrities Wear and How to Mimic Them

Posted 1 year ago by

Some celebs have outrageous and daring style; Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga for example. It’s fun, but is it practical for the real world? Below are four celebs wearing crazy yet fun outfits.

If you’re the type of person who likes standing out, give one a try!

Ke$ha is all about the “no pants” trend, but when she does wear pants…she doesn’t disappoint! Her matching pink pant suit paired with an old Metallica t-shirt just works. Think you could pull this eccentric look off?

If you want to give it a go, head to your local thrift shop. Printed pant suits were all the rage in the late 80’s. Once you find one that fits, get it tailored.

If that seems like too much work, give ASOS a try.

Selena Gomez

Selena went all out: high-slit skirt, matching crop-top, military buttons and intense hair. Since she stuck with black, this look isn’t too over powering.

To re-create this look, wear a midi tube skirt and a high neck crop top. To keep it practical, stay away from high-slits and bold hair.

Lena Dunham

Hello mixed prints!

We love how Lena is wearing an array of different prints: snake skin, floral and stripes! To re-create this look, make sure your patterns go together. If you’re wearing a shirt with a large print, wear pants that have a small print. Vise-versa.

Katy Perry

Katy has been wearing a lot of maxi dresses lately! The dress below has a gothic feel with a 90’s flair. Or maybe she’s trying to start a trend. Conservative rocker maybe?

To re-create Katy’s look, add a leather jacket to a long maxi dress. We love this one from S.I.C. Couture!

Would you ever wear one of the outfits above? Let us know in the comments !

Posted 2 years ago by

Are you still digging the nail art trend? We are! For the past year, the favorite accessory has been nail art. I personally wish I could indulge in it a little more — I’m not the best nail artist — but thankfully, many companies are coming out with stick-on nail art!

Think you’re good at nail art? If so, liqueur company Hpnotic wants you to show them how you GLAM LOUDER to win fab prizes! During each 2-week challenge you can submit photos in different categories to win – including the “glammest” nails (going on now), makeup and overall look.

Hpnotiq is a refreshing blend of French vodka, exotic fruit juices, and a touch of cognac. If you’re a fan of girly drinks (like me!) you’ll love this stuff!

For me, glam nails mean sparkles and glitter! For my entry, I decided on a pretty coral color and some gold sparkles. I’m a sucker for a statement nail!

Here are the glamorous prizes up for grabs:

♥ A $1,000 gift card to Sephora or Ulta

♥ The grand prize is a trip for you and three friends to go shopping with Khloe Kardashian Odam in Los Angeles! The grand prize winner will also receive a professional photo shoot for the chance to be in a real Hpnotiq Ad.

For this challenge, Hpnotiq wants you to show them the glammest nails, nail art or nail finish that you’ve ever seen or done. Think you can nail it? You can enter as many times as you want!

Snap a pic of your own, or find a pic online. For this round, they’re choosing 4 lucky winners to receive free mani/pedis for a year valued up to $1,200!!!

3 Fashion Apps You Need To Know About Now

Posted 3 years ago by

Being a part of the tech industry, I know a few things about apps — the good and the bad. Here are a few fashion based apps I seriously can’t get enough of. All three have the potential to change how a girl shops forever!

1. Fashism

Fashism is by far my all time favorite fashion app, I started using it last summer and have been hooked ever since. In short, it’s a website and mobile app which started in 2009 as a way for people to get advice on what to wear.

How It Works:

You take a picture of yourself wearing an outfit, you upload it to Fashism and from there get advice from the community. They can click the “Love It” or “Leave It” button as well as comment. It’s a friendly community that gives you an honest opinion.

Perhaps you don’t know which prom dress to buy, or you don’t know if your outfit is appropriate for the office. The Fashism community is there to help.

Click here to see one of the looks I submitted. Fashism also has an  online store with nothing exceeding $30, how Broke & Chic of them!

2. Pick n’ Tell

This is a brand new app that just launched last week! If it builds a big enough community, it could become your new best friend in the dressing room!

How It Works:

So you’re in the dressing room, you’ve tried on a dress but aren’t sure if it’s “the one” for that big event you have to go to. By using the Pick N’ Tell’s self-picture taking tool, you capture a video of yourself and then share it with your PickN’Tell contacts and on social networks like Facebook and Twitter (only if you want) all for free!

Pick N’ Tell is a great way to get instant feedback from your friend when you’re shopping alone! At the launch I was very impressed and could see it being useful. It adds engagement, it helps retailers build an out-of-store relationship with their customers, you can get great advice from your friends as well as stylists and popular bloggers and you can even scan the barcodes of items you’re considering.

According to their website:

It’s all about you! Whether you’re debating what to buy, or if you just feel like showing off, PickN’Tell is a great way to keep tabs on your favorite outfits and stores.

Below is the video I saw at the launch that helps demonstrate how it works!

This app is also great for retailers since it’s free marketing! When a customer shares an item from their store, they’re reaching a larger audience!

3. Cloth

This app isn’t about getting advice or sharing your outfits with friends, Cloth is your own personal outfit diary.

According to Courtney Boyd Myers of The Next Web:

Picking out the perfect outfit can take hours. Whenever I start to get dressed up, I always think, what did I wear this time last year? I’ll even go through old photo albums on Facebook or Flickr to remind myself of the combinations I put together in the past to save myself some time in the present.

How It Work:

With Cloth, you’re supposed to take a picture of yourself wearing an outfit you already own to keep track of the differnt items you have in your closet. You can even put your photo’s in different categories such as vacation, work and school. Below is a video to get a better idea.

Amazingly, all three of the apps mentioned above are free. Download them and play around. Do you think any of these apps are useful? Let us know in the comments below.

Festival Footwear For The Fashion-Forward Girl

Posted 3 years ago by

As another summer rolls around, so does a music-packed, mud-splattered season of festivals for us all to enjoy. British festivals are renowned for two things: Unpredictable weather and wellies!

Though the first does often add to the fun, it has an impact on the outfits that we had already planned for Leeds and Isle of Wight. Choosing the right footwear is always a hard decision, and many things need to be considered: comfort; practicality, and of course style.

For us girls, the last is definitely the most important, as festivals are a time for us to truly express our personal style without having to hold back. If you were too afraid to wear those neon sandals out of the door last week, now is the perfect time to step out onto the field with confidence and seriously cool steeze.

To help you decide which shoes to style the rest of your outfit with this summer, here’s a rundown of five on-trend footwear choices for the festival season.

 Go Edgy With The Flatform

A new trend for 2012, the flatform keeps popping up everywhere, and for good reason! Without adding any extra discomfort, the flatform gives height and improves posture, and even better – they look so on-trend with almost everything!

The flatform is very much a statement shoe, especially if you go super high, but you can bring down their gregarious aesthetics by opting for a flatform or  high-top sneakers.

High-top flatforms are getting snapped on a deluge of celebrities at the moment, so these are a great choice for comfort as well as style. Team your flatforms with a bright bodycon skirt and relaxed, grungy sweater. Pile on the accessories and you’re good to party  throughout the night.

♥ $65.00 Nasty Gal

Go Boho With The Ankle Boot

This season, the ankle boot is still very much on trend. To bring it up to speed with 2012, opt for a flat, fringed style. Minnetonka do a great range of boho ankle boots and moccasins that are perfect for all festivals, especially Gottwood and Secret Garden Party which both have a slightly boho, hippy vibe.

Team your fringed ankle boots with a printed maxi dress for serious boho brownie points, or opt for a floral summer dress if you prefer your outfits to have a feminine, girly tone. Not so practical if the heavens decide to open thanks to their suede finish, but let’s just cross our fingers for a dry weekend!

♥ $155.00 Nasty Gal

Go Punk With Creepers

Creepers have become somewhat of a fashion statement this year. Once worn in the 70’s and 80’s by the likes of Bananarama, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, now they are worn by the likes of Rita Ora, Rihanna and Fearne Cotton.

Their chunky sole likens them to the flatform trainers, but with a suede finish and often a print, they have been translated from the Blue Suede Shoes of the 50’s into an edgy choice with a punk twist for 2012. They are going to be a popular choice for this season’s festivals thanks to their height and versatility – creepers look great with jeans, skirts and shorts.

♥ $58.00 Asos

 Go Girly With Sandals

Sandals are a great option for the European festivals like Benicassim, where sunshine is pretty much guaranteed! For the UK, sandals can sometimes feel like a regretted choice if the sky decided to pour down.

Choose sandals if you’re guaranteed dry weather, as they’re a practical choice if you prefer flat shoes. They’re a great choice to add femininity, especially if the rest of your outfit is on the more masculine side. Choose jeans, a pretty top and a leather jacket for a girly outfit with an edge, or go all out with floral prints and girly colours.

 Go Traditional With Wellies

Wellies (rain boots) are synonymous with British festivals, and Hunter wellies are by far the most popular choice of brand when it comes to this practical choice of footwear. The only style you’ll need if the weather forecast looks wet and grey, you can truly make wellies a style statement of their own with the right outfit. Choose a pretty, fun playsuit to balance out the practicality factor.

Hunter Wellies: $125

So there you go! Five different choices of footwear for your chosen festival this summer. Which ones are you going to choose?

Spring Fashion, Nautical Style

Posted 3 years ago by

When winter turns to spring, there comes a need for newness and change in every area of life, especially in fashion. For most people, spring comes as a huge relief after the cold and dreary winter. This relief plays out in fashion with the response of bright colors, light fabrics, flowery patterns and slim, crisp shapes.

One thing about changing seasons that can be difficult, is trying to keep a budget for a new wardrobe.  Tj Maxx and Marshall’s carry designer and fashionable clothes for low and affordable prices.  Also, make sure you check out sales, and clip your coupons for great deals at department stores.  Forever 21 is also a great place to find cute, inexpensive clothes for the spring.  Spring fashion is the most exciting, luxuriating in the sharp contrast of cold turning to warm and the subtle elegance of new growth.

With all of the impulses to change up the wardrobe, the best way to keep spring fashion classy is to turn to the casual, sophisticated styles inspired by the Hamptons. The atmosphere is full of freshness, laid back elegance and classic chic. The combination of the relaxed environment with tastes for high fashion brings forth the epitome of spring style.

Characteristic of relaxing in your Hamptons homes; nautical fashion is summed up with clear, crisp ensembles and pieces in natural materials such as cotton, linen and silk, colors with a flavor of sea breezes and classic, well defined feminine shapes. With timeless pieces that easily transition from day to night, from the beach to the city, it’s easy to create a personal style by combining certain wardrobe staples and accessorizing in a unique way. With a destination like the Hamptons in mind, a nautical flavored fashion emerges that is timeless, ageless, classy, unique and easy going.

Spring is also a time to bring out all of the lightness and fun. Don’t get caught up in trying to go all out. Let the focus of the wardrobe be practicality and relaxation, and the beauty and style will look effortless without getting in the way.

For daytime, have fun with light, simple outfits in crisp fabrics. Focus on clear shapes that have a great silhouette. Dressing in solid colors is always classy and timeless and makes accessorizing simple. Save money on clothes shopping by investing in classic pieces, like denim pencil skirts, great jeans, basic tees and cardigans, that can be paired with lots of other things. Just because simplicity is the goal doesn’t mean it has to be boring!

Pull out striking colors and dramatic shapes. Don’t forget stripes! Enjoy stripes in every area of fashion, from a nautical bag to a striking black and white top to a flirty skirt. Chambray is both trendy and timeless, so look for a flattering dress that works for at home, for errands and with a cardigan for a casual night out and use it as a centerpiece this spring.

The fun of evenings in spring comes with converting day looks to something a little more dressy. Exchange a cardigan for a blazer, cover up a light dress with a chic jacket, or take the sweater off to show off the pretty details of a cute frock. Change flats for heels and put hair up in an up-do, and the look is complete! The look of Hamptons fashion is effortless and graceful, so don’t try too hard.

Accessorize the simplicity of the spring look with favorite, personal details. Wear lots of heels and open sandals in natural leather, accentuating the breezy naturalness of the nautical feel. To bring out the nautical feel, choose jewelry in brass, from necklaces to bangles. Keep jewelry light, since spring at the Hamptons is relaxed and classy. Enjoy the fresh nautical fashions this spring, relaxing in effortless style.

Tis The Season For…Boots?

Posted 3 years ago by

You bet! Now is the perfect time to stock your wardrobe for Winter 12/13.

Off season shopping is a great way to save on quality boots and coats so you won’t have to resort to the cheap and un-warm variety when the time come again this October. You could score a nice coat that was originally over $200 for under $50, or a cute pair of quality boots under $30!

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to wear them until the weather allows for it again but the amount you’ll save will be worth it. Since it’s not 100% warm yet you could even break in your new boots so you won’t have to go through a blister filled September!

More on Off-Season Shopping

Just make sure you stick to the basics. A quality black peacoat won’t be out of style next season (I promise!) However, a black and white tweed one might!

Trend Alert: Are Flare Jeans Coming Back?

Posted 3 years ago by

Victoria Beckham was recently spotted wearing dark wash bootcut jeans. Believe it or not, she rocked them!

Flare and bootcut jeans have been taking a vacation in our bottom drawer for about five years now — that’s a long time! Since then, skinny jeans have really stepped up to the plate, becoming our our go-to pair. Not only do skinnies flatter most figures, they actually highlight the awesome shoes we wear, while flares have always hidden our rockin’ heels and adorable flats.

So is it okay for them to come back? I think this resurge is all on us! Are we going to follow in Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes’s footsteps? Or are we going to keep that pair of flares under our beds for a few more seasons?

Does age have anything to do with it?

Flare and bootcut jeans have never permanently left the closets of Katie Holmes (33), Jennifer Aniston (43) or Victoria (37). In the fashion world, this suggests that the 30+ crowd can rock them, while the 15-30 crowd can’t. That said, Disney star Vanessa Hudgens hasn’t really stopped wearing flare jeans either.

What do you Like More?

Katie in flare jeans or skinny jeans?

Vanessa in flare jeans or skinny jeans?

A guy friend of mine, who recently turned 21, told his mom she was wearing “out dated” jeans. An e-mail session began:

They are not waaay flared, just medium.   I just bought them from Banana Republic and love the way they fit.  Am I wearing OUTDATED jeans?

My response? No! It can take years to find that perfect pair that fits you in all the right places. If you love how your jeans fit, wear them!

In NY, the fashion capital of the world, I’ve made an effort to pay more attention to what people were wearing these past few days. So far, I haven’t noticed anyone wearing jeans other than the skinny variety…except for tourists. But the thing is, they didn’t just wear a cute outfit that happened to include flares. It was awful. Picture flare jeans, running sneakers, an “I ♥ NY” t-shirt and an LL Bean backpack.

To flare or not to flare is a messy question, and really doesn’t have one solid answer; it just has rules. If you never really gave up your flare/bootcut jeans, then it’s time. Stop at your local Forever 21 or Old Navy and snag a pair of affordable skinnies. If you’ve been wearing skinnies, then don’t be afraid to play around with other types of jeans: bootcut, flares, boyfriend, wide leg, high waisted. Just have fun and mix it up like Katie and Vanessa! Keep in mind that fashion is always repeating itself.

1. Stick to the dark wash variety.

2. Wear bootcut jeans — avoid the flare’s for a little while longer.

3. Always wear some sort of heel with them. Flats and sneakers will give you a 1999 look.

4. Try and wear a dressier top. If you’re in a t-shirt mood just accessorize with a statement necklace and a blazer.
