Our 9 Favorite Street Style Trends from New York Fashion Week

Posted 5 months ago by

Yesterday marked the last day of Fashion Week in New York City. We’re definitely sad, but we’re excited to see what London Fashion Week has in store for the fashion industry.

Of course seeing the new collections from our favorite designers is enjoyable, but nothing beats street style. NYC’s most fashionable residents attend NYFW every season, and believe me when I say this — they’re the real taste makers. Below are our favorite trends we spotted outside of Lincoln Center (where the magic happens).

1. Moody Florals

We’re loving the resurgence of moody floral prints from the 90’s! Proof that not all floral prints have to be ultra girly.

2. All Black

Want to look like a tough-as-nails fashionista? Consider wearing all black the next time you go out with your friends.

Have you always wanted to be a prima ballerina? We’re loving how these ladies wore the famous ballerina poof! You may not have the moves, but you can at least have the look.

6. Plaid

How can you say no to plaid? It’s classy and perfect for the upcoming fall season.

7. Pattern-Mixing

Pattern mixing can be difficult, but these ladies pulled it off perfectly!

8. Rainbow Hair and Lips

We loved all the off-beat hair and lip colors! Consider giving it a try if you’re getting bored with your look.

9. Hats

We love hats since they automatically make outfits more interesting. They’re also great for hiding bad hair days!

This New Yorker Knows How to Look Fab on a Dime

Posted 1 year ago by

Last fall we featured Jaz, a New Yorker who knows how to look fab on a dime. This fall, she’s back! Below are three of Jaz’s fall friendly outfits that are both affordable and beyond stylish:

Sporty Chic

This trend has been going on for a few months and Jaz does it so well. It’s both sexy and relaxed, and would be the perfect outfit for Sunday brunch with the girls.

If you’re interested in trying this trend out, add a varsity jacket to your LBD!

Downtown Cool

The light wash jeans paired with an over-sized white button-down gives Jaz a trendy yet relaxed look, while her structured navy jacket and red lips add that sophisticated edge.

This look is perfect for a day full or errands or a cup of coffee with a friend on a rainy day.

Fall Whites

I think everyone can agree that the whole “no white after Labor Day” rule has got to go…it just doesn’t make sense anymore. We love how Jaz paired her white blazer with an outfit that that’s both work and date friendly.

Loved Jaz’s outfits? Give her a follow on Instagram to see what other fashionable things she wears!

Street Style: Fashionable Duos at NYFW

Posted 1 year ago by

Today is the last day of New York Fashion Week. To finish it off right, we did some street style photos outside of Lincoln Center. Just take a look at these fashionable duos!

Those Barbie pink lips and mint shoes…love it!

These two ladies look super classy, but to give some edge to their outfits they each added something special…a torn t-shirt and a studded clutch!

I think this is an actual couple. How cute are they?!

Those legs, those shoes, those pants…so jealous!

Pink hair and neon clothes…these two girls really stood out. If you love that neon lace dress, find a similar one here.

NYFW: Here’s What They Wore on Day 4

Posted 1 year ago by

New York Fashion Week is a week long event that takes place twice a year in both February and September. Designers debut their new collections on the runway and trends are created.

The shows are always exciting but what excites me even is the fashionable attendees — celebs, bloggers, magazine editors, stylists and buyers. Every season, you’re bound to see the world’s most fashionable outside of Lincoln Center striking a pose for street style photographers. Instead of just watching yesterday, I decided to take a few photos of my own…

Below is what they wore on Sunday 9/8/13 — day four of NYFW:

Audrey Kitching struck a pose for me wearing numerous statement pieces — metallic pants, a neon shirt, a cow print bag, a bold necklace and fancy floral sunnies!

Metallic shoes and pink trousers? Yes!

Here we spotted crazy shoes and bold colors.

We even spotted the Hilton sisters! Paris opted for an edgy snake skin print dress while Nicky went for a cobalt blue dress and reflective sunglasses.

Totally fell in love with the mix of prints!

7 Stylish Sunglasses Trends for Summer 2013

Posted 2 years ago by

Summer is the best time to try out different types of sunglasses. It’s not only the season when the sun and UV rays are strongest, but it’s also the time for festivals and vacations, a.k.a funky fashion!

Here are the top sunglasses trends for this season, as seen on street style blogs from around the world:

1. Mirror lenses

In the past, such lenses were used on sports sunglasses, because they are very efficient against sun glare. In a few months, however, they became a must for any type of frame, from cat eyes to aviators. Click here to check out more great sunglass styles with reflective lenses.

2. Vintage sunglasses

Fashion is cyclical, you know that, so what was once en vogue will get that status again. It’s the case for vintage sunglasses: from the round John Lennon styles, to the chic cat eye frames of the 50s.

3. DIY sunglasses

The latest trend is to customize your own sunglasses. The trick? Just pick your favorite material – gemstones, pearls, studs – and glue them to an old pair of shades. The result? Unique!

4. Sunglasses with a twist

It seems that designers have never been as inventive as they are now! Sunglasses get the most unexpected twists, like an upside down look, or an unusual shape that we never would’ve thought possible. The best part is that it works! To find a pair of unique sunglasses like the ones below, check out Giant Vintage Sunglasses

5. Colorblock sunglasses

Colorblocking clothes is passe, but sunglasses are in! Whether they have contrasting colored arms, or they’re horizontally divided into two colors, they are hot!

6. Clear frames

Clear plastic has a very summery look — what’s not to like? It looks cool in white, as well as in pastels, and in any possible frame shape.

7. Floral frames

Flowers at the corners of the frame are huge! Made of plastic, resin or even textile, they make a romantic and stylish look.

7 Street Style Trends at New York Fashion Week F/W 13

Posted 2 years ago by

The first few days of New York Fashion Week were brutal. It was either snowing, hailing, raining, sleeting and at one time, there was a full-on blizzard outside.

Weather drama aside, we at Broke & Chic still managed to find super stylish peeps who picked fashion over warmth right outside of the tents at Lincoln Center. Below are the top 7 trends we spotted at NYFW!

1. Cobalt Blue

Blue is such a striking color, especially against the snow. These five ladies really rocked it.

2. Bold Prints

Asymmetrical, floral, stripes, it doesn’t really matter, as long as it’s bold! These three fashionistas really nailed the bold pattern look.

Get a similar pair of floral pants from Forever 21 here.

3. Evening Jackets

Evening jackets are an up-and-coming trend here in NYC. They usually have a bold print and aren’t meant for warmth.

If you love the evening jacket look, definitely stay tuned for Christian Siriano’s collection for HSN. It’ll be out this Spring! If you can’t wait that long, check this one out.

4. Metallic Shoes

Get ready, metallic shoes are going to be a must with every outfit this Spring!

 5. Hot Pink Accessories

If your outfit feels a tad boring, a bright colored accessory will make it pop! Whether you make that statement piece your hat or clutch, you’re bound to turn a few heads.

6. White

When I think of Winter, the color white always comes to mind. It’s a shame when people think we should shun it after Labor Day. These three ladies decided to ignore the silly rule, and we’re happy they did. They look awesome!

Get a similar pair of black and white pants at Charlotte Russe for only $25.00!

Get a similar pair of white platform shoes from Ami Clubwear for under $50 here.

7. Charcoal Dress Pants

We think Coco Chanel would approve. These ladies look fierce!

Broke Fashion: Meet Chris Visions — You’re Gonna Love This Guy!

Posted 2 years ago by

Meet Chris Visions! Chris is a talented and fashionable illustrator living and working in Richmond, Virginia. He’s an artist through and through and is currently working with RVA Magazine. When he’s not creating something awesome for the magazine he’s either advertising in Richmond or working on comic projects!

  • Shirt: $9 Fantastic Thrift
  • Khaki Pants: $20 Target
  • Vans: a hand-me-down from a friend
  • Bowtie: $3 Bygones Vintage

Chris is  a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and has since been featured in the Society of Illustrators student show (NYC), He has worked for a number of clients such as Radical Comics, Mariner Media Inc., and Stain Glass Llama Inc. He is also involved in projects such as the RVAnthology, a local comic book collaboration with fellow artists in Richmond, and showing in local gallery’s.

To keep up with Chris Visions, make sure you follow his Twitter, Tumblr and website!

Broke & Chic: What got you interested in fashion?

It started with trying to put together Michael Jackson’s outfits as a kid. Seeing a black guy rocking so many fly jackets had me yearning for more than hand-me-downs as a kid.

  • Shirt: $19 Target
  • Jeans: $20 Target
  • Hi-Top Nike’s: $12 Rumors

B&C: What’s one trend you can’t stand?

Gaudy, poorly designed, comic book themed attire. I just CAN’T stand it. The Bat Symbol looks great without paint splatters and tribal marks, trust me people.

B&C: What are your go-to stores to shop at and why?

I really like Rumors and other thrift stores because they’re full of surprises. There’s a bit of “history” that lingers in places like that and all my favorite items of clothing have been picked up from places like that.

  • Shirt: $5 Fantastic Thrift
  • Khaki Pants: $20 Target
  • Vans: a hand-me-down from a friend
  • Bowtie: $3 Bygones Vintage

B&C: Where do you get your style inspiration?

I’m finding new places to pull my fashion from everyday! Fashion seemed really unattainable to me as a kid cause I was poor and thought it took too much money to get “the cool clothes”. All the kids who were well off rocked $300 JNCO’s, so I decided to not concern myself with that too much. But as I grew older I just surrounded myself with bits of nostalgia, things that made me happy as a kid: plaid, nice comic book tees, chuck taylors, bowties, thick rim glasses, stylin’ socks and so on.

B&C: How would you describe your style?

I lean towards a playful but classy approach. I like what I’m wearing to be graphic, to pop like an icon. I’m still tweaking it everyday. My bowtie game is getting strong, and I really like them because they harken back to an era of icons.

B&C: Has your style changed/evolved over time?

Definitely. I’ve taken my style more by the reigns, especially after meeting my girlfriend. Her style is so unique, it kinda called me out to step up my game! You gotta come correct standing beside that lady!

♥ It’s true! Check out his girlfriend Cathryn’s Broke & Chic style feature here!

Broke Fashion in Richmond, Virginia

Posted 3 years ago by

Over 4th of July weekend, Broke & Chic ventured down south to Richmond, Virginia. The home of Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, Philip Morris and Need Supply Co.

While there, Richmond was going through an extreme heat wave with a daily temperature of 102°. Despite the heat, Broke & Chic was able to find quite a few fashionable people. I don’t know about you, but when it’s overly hot and humid outside, I don’t even want to leave the house! I give these fashion-forward people so much credit for going the extra mile.

  • Dress: $40.00 Ebay (dyed it herself)
  • Shoes: $135.00 Camper
  • Necklace: Homemade

Dress: $189.00 Glass Boat

  • Shirt: $14.95 H&M
  • Jeans: $49.95 H&M
  • Shoes: $150 Aldo

Out of the bunch, who was your favorite fashion-forward southerner?
