First Impressions Count

You’ve got to be aware that first impressions last a long time! When people first meet you, they’re looking for any clues they can get that speak to your character, so the professionalism has to start right from the beginning.

How you present yourself is up to you, but you’ve got to be aware of how you come across and the message that sends. You’ve got a few seconds to make a good first impression, so make sure it’s a professional one.

Dress Accordingly

Just because you’ve made a great first impression doesn’t mean you can’t ruin it by acting inappropriately.

There are social norms that professional people have to abide by, and one of those is dressing for the occasion. When you’re dressed in the correct attire, it shows social intelligence and that you understand the processes of the society you’re a part of.

This is one of the first steps to appearing professional and it’s surprising how far you can get by looking the part.

Professional Attitude

Looking the part can get you so far, but to go the extra mile, you’ve got to act the part. A professional attitude might look very different depending on what industry you’re in, but you’ve got to find the one that works for you.

Take cues from those around you, particularly those that are more experienced and have had success. Find out what has made them successful and see if you want to incorporate them into your own persona.

You’ve got to be natural, but at the same time, there’s nothing stopping you from working on demonstrating a more professional attitude.

Look After Your Car

It’s not just the way you act and dress that demonstrates professionalism. It shines through with everything you do. The different areas of your life have to match and your car is a part of this.

When do you see someone who is immaculately dressed but drives a banged-up car that’s full of trash? If you do see this, then it makes you question that person’s professionalism, because the two just don’t match.

Communication

Clear, concise communication is vital in business and it’s an important part of appearing professional as well.

You’ve got to be able to work with others, and to do this, you need to be comfortable communicating in a professional setting. This is something that comes with experience, but there’s nothing stopping you from getting involved and practicing.
