A widespread problem that many people struggle with is the drying and cracking of the heels. Reasons for its occurrence include dry weather, standing for a long time, excess body weight, medical conditions like diabetes and thyroid problems, aging and usage of non-moisturizing soap.

Common signs of cracked feet are peeling skin, itchiness, pain, bleeding and red patches. If not given proper care, it can lead to serious problems like infections, difficulty in walking, burning sensations and lots more.

Foot Care Tips

Below are some simple tips and remedies to get rid of dry, cracked feet for good:

1. Avoid Footwear Having Its Back Exposed

Though they may look good on you, avoid wearing sandals and shoes with open backs to protect the feet from cracking. Covering the feet will keep the skin moist, even during the summer. Invest in shoes that fit the size of your feet. Ill-fitting shoes can cause pain and friction to the heels leading to cracks.

2. Hydrate Yourself

Keep your feet well hydrated by washing them in lukewarm water. Avoid washing the feet in hot water as it can cause excessive dryness. Drink plenty of water as it hydrates you from inside, keeps you healthy and ultimately rids you of problems like dryness and cracked heels. Apply a good quality moisturizer at least twice a day as well.

3. Have A Balanced Diet

It’s important to have a proper diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, fruits and vegetables which keep your body moisturized. Eating foods rich in the vitamins A and E as well as minerals like calcium, zinc, iron etc. aids in the healing process. For these nutrients you can consume meats like chicken and fish, dairy products like milk and yogurt as well as nuts, beans, and brown rice.

4. Avoid Standing For Long

Try not standing for long periods and sit and rest your feet as often as possible. Standing barefoot in damp areas can also make the skin dry.

5. Keep A Balanced Weight

Excessive weight can cause cracking in the feet as the extra weight increases the pressure on the heels, expanding them sideways. Every individual’s feet are supposed to handle only a certain amount of weight, so being overweight will most certainly create problems.

6. Go for a Banana Moisturizer

This is one of the cheapest home remedies to heal dry and cracked feet. After mashing a ripe banana into a smooth paste, apply it to the cracked area. Allow the paste to sit for fifteen minutes so that the skin absorbs the nourishment. Then wash your feet with warm water and soak them in cold water for a few minutes. Doing this helps moisturize the skin effectively. Soft and smooth heels are sure to result from daily use.

7. Massage with Oil

Using olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil or vegetable oil for daily massaging will keep cracked heels away. Regular massaging also increases blood circulation in these areas and softens the feet. For more moisturizing, leave the oil on overnight.

8. Scrub It Away

Dry and dead skin should be scrubbed off along with the dirt that sticks all too easily to the heels. Using a pumice stone or a foot file will prove effective. The thickness of the hard skin can be reduced if done regularly. Depending on your skin type, choose to employ this scrubbing method either on dry skin or when it is wet. Another thing you can do is purchase a tool. We really like the Silk’n Pedi.

9. Use Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax can prove to be a great treatment for painful and cracked heels. Mix some mustard oil or coconut oil with some paraffin wax and heat it till the wax melts. Allow this mixture to cool at room temperature. Once this is done, apply it to your feet overnight by covering them with a plastic bag and a pair of socks. Wash it off in the morning to see a positive change in the way your cracked heels look and feel!

10. Try A Rice Flour Scrub

Another awesome homemade scrub for exfoliation is the rice flour scrub. Like other scrubs, it helps remove the dead skin caused from dryness and cracking. Add a few drops of apple cider vinegar and honey to a handful of ground rice and mix it up. You may add some olive oil or almond oil to the mixture if your feet are very dry. Mix it well till it becomes a thick paste. Soak the cracked feet in warm water for about 15 minutes. After this, apply the paste and scrub it on to the dead skin and cracks to see great results.

11. Moisturize With Honey

Due to its anti-bacterial properties, honey is a brilliant moisturizer for the feet. Honey helps to seep in moisture into the skin, which aids to protect the feet from dryness and stimulates the healing of the cracks. Mix a cup of honey into a bucket of warm water. Soak your feet in this water for about 20 minutes. Scrub the feet gently to flaunt supple and smooth skin.

12. Wash Them With Lemon Juice

Adding to the list of home remedies for cracked heels is the usage of lemon juice. Lemon has a special property which helps to lessen skin roughness and remove dead skin. Directly apply the juice squeezed out of a lemon on to your rough feet. Another method is to soak the cracked heel in warm water mixed in lemon juice for about 15 minutes. Scrub it off using a pumice stone and soap. Regular use will help you see those fissures disappear.

13. Apply An Indian Lilac Paste

The neem / margosa / Indian lilac has properties that are anti-fungal in nature which is powerful enough to treat feet fissures. Take a few fresh lilac leaves and crush them to make a fine paste. Add a few spoons of turmeric powder. Apply this paste regularly to the cracked feet and allow it to dry for half an hour. Use warm water to wash it off to prevent cracked heels from re-appearing.
