If you are recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction, the chance of relapse is constantly looming over you. You have to work hard at recovery every single day but sometimes, things get the better of you. It is important that you take steps to prevent a relapse, but you also need to be prepared for a relapse if it does happen. It doesn’t have to be the end of your recovery journey and as long as you react to it in the right way, you can get back on track and do better next time.

These are some of the most important steps that you need to take if you relapse:

Be Honest 

When people relapse, they are often afraid to tell people about it. If your family and friends have been hurt by your addiction in the past, you may not want to tell them about your relapse because you may feel that you are letting them down. However, if you are not honest and open about your relapse, you will not have the support that you need to get back on track.

If you try to manage this situation on your own, you will struggle and you will be more likely to fall back into long term addiction. The people around you are there to support you, so be honest about your relapse and let them know that you are dedicated to getting back on track again. 

Get Back Into a Recovery Program

When people have been in recovery for a long while, they may think that they can manage their relapse themselves, but this is rarely the case. It is important that you get back into a drug and alcohol detox program as soon as possible. This reduces the chances of falling into a long term addiction again and ensures that you have the support that you need. 

Keep Things in Perspective 

A relapse can feel like a complete failure, but that is not the case. Think about how long you have been in recovery for and all of the progress you have made over the months and years. This relapse doesn’t mean that your recovery journey is over, this is just a bump in the road.

Make sure that you try to stay positive as much as possible and look forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past. 

Manage Your Feelings 

Even though you are trying to keep things in perspective, you are going to have a lot of negative feelings about your relapse. You will feel a lot of guilt and self doubt, and you may have issues with negative self worth. These negative feelings can be a dangerous trigger for addicts, so it is important that you take steps to improve your self esteem and manage those feelings as much as possible. 

A relapse is always going to be tough to get through, but if you follow these steps, you can start to get back on track again and continue on the road to recovery.
