1. Stinky Tofu
Right off the bat, the name of this particular foodstuff should have you intrigued. This delightful piece of culinary excellence is, in fact, rather odiferous. Popular in a number of countries including China and Taiwan, this dish is made by soaking tofu in a mix of fermented milk and a vegetable, meat and fish-based brine.
Although the name and preparation process for this particular foodstuff may seem off putting, it is actually quite delicious. Unless you end up with under-fermented tofu, in which case it could seem bland.
This incredible meaty treat is one of the best-known snack products produced in all of South Africa and is often what visitors to the beautiful country are most keen on trying. There is a great many products in the UK and other countries that claim to be Biltong, but unless the product is properly air dried, spiced and cured, such as the products found on Cape to Cairo, it is unlikely to capture the true glory of true biltong.
A solid runner-up to biltong is droëwors, which is an absolutely gorgeous, dried sausage product, similar in many ways to biltong and just as tasty. It is essentially a dried version of boerewors and is an incredibly popular snack product among the more carnivorous populace of South Africa.
This incredible and breathtakingly unhealthy Canadian snack food was originally created in Quebec and has since become a staple snack throughout the country. Literally named after slang for “a mess” this delicious combination of fries, cheese curds and gravy is perhaps one of the single most unhealthy foods you could possibly ingest. However, it is unspeakably delicious and well worth the hassle of seeking it out.
A German invention, marzipan is the combination of almonds, sugar, syrup, and egg whites. It’s most commonly used as a baking ingredient, but is often enjoyed as a snack in its own right and is widely loved for its light, almond flavor.
One of the best things to come out of France, the croissant is a well-loved and widely known pastry that is best enjoyed in the morning with a cup of coffee and a breathtaking sunrise. The pastry itself is largely made from butter and incredibly light dough that results in that iconic melt-in-your-mouth lightness to the delicious treat.
Now you have six culinary delights through which to take your tastebuds on a journey of discovery.
