Joshua Tree is one of my favorite places to visit. I went for the first time in August of 2020 and that trip changed my life. Even though I’ve lived in Los Angeles for two years now, the desert scenery is still foreign to me. Being from the East Coast, I’m used to lush green due to all the rain, and heat is always met with high humidity. The desert is the exact opposite. Instead of different shades of green, Joshua Tree is a beautiful palette of nudes browns, and reds paired with sand, cacti, and intense dry heat. The lack of light pollution also allows you to see the night sky in all its glory.
Since that first trip, my boyfriend and I go regularly—about every 6 weeks during the summer and fall. It’s about a 2.5 hour drive from Los Angeles with no traffic. But it’s LA…so there is traffic. Due to Palm Springs being close by and Joshua Tree National Park being a major destination for locals and visitors alike, the traffic can be intense. A weekend trip last September took 5 hours! My secret? Opt for a weekday getaway instead or consider going in the winter when the desert is chilly.
During our trip, we were met with no traffic, so it was smooth sailing the entire drive. We laughed the entire way and did a pit stop to get the famous date shake at Hadley (a must). Winter was a rough season for us both, so we needed a few days to relax and reconnect with ourselves. We have been in a creativity rut since the beginning of 2022 and it has been affecting our moods. When you’re a creative by trade, hitting a wall is defeating and frustrating. We considered both San Diego and Santa Barbra, but opted for Joshua Tree for this here photoshoot for Solado—a new fashion brand that I can totally get down with.
Not only is Solado affordable and trendy, Solado focuses on gender inclusivity and sustainable practices—a rarity in the fast-fashion industry. Plus, they ship worldwide!
I thought the print of my slit hem midi dress would pair perfectly with the stunning palette of the desert…and I wasn’t wrong. The vibe of the desert and the vibe of the dress clicked. It was also a lot of fun doing this shoot as it got our creative juices flowing again…just in time for the warmer weather.
Since we have finally hit a new tier of the pandemic, life is slowly but surly coming back and many of us can’t wait to start enjoying night life again—myself included. I don’t know about you, but my wardrobe is lacking in the “night out” department. And with Y2K fashion being back, all I want to do is dress up. I’m the class of 07, so seeing Y2K fashion being back is making me super sad I got rid of all my dope clothes and accessories from those days. The satin triangle tube tops, the butterfly clips, the tattoo chokers, the chunky platform sneakers, the denim skirts…I had it all.
