Cancer is a difficult disease to handle; whether it is you or a family member who is affected.
When dealing with the diagnosis of cancer, one of the hardest things we have to get used to is radiation therapy. Due to the nature of cancer and its impact on the body, cancer treatment can be harsh and often causes the body a lot of strain.
Today we want to talk about how you can avoid feeling weak and vulnerable after your cancer treatment and the foods you should avoid eating to stay healthy.
Grilled and Deep Fried Meat
When we think of a healthy diet most of us assume that lean meat in any form is the way to go. However; when you have cancer there are more precautions to consider. When we subject meat to high heats such as one a barbecue or by deep frying, carcinogenic products can be created. Usually these products aren’t too much of a risk, but for cancer patients these can be especially dangerous. Try to avoid foods like this and opt for baking, poaching, or boiling foods instead.
As well as meats that have been subjected to high temperatures, we should avoid eating processed meats wherever possible. This means food such as bacon, sausage, chorizo and more should be kept to a minimum. The fats and lack of nutrition in these foods will do your body more harm than good, and won’t give you the strength to get through those difficult radiotherapy sessions.
We all know that alcohol can be a problem for the body, and as a cancer patient alcohol can cause a lot of drowsiness and dizziness and it can make it difficult for you to keep a clear head and feel strong. A glass of wine now and again is not a problem, just try not to make it a habit!
There are a whole myriad of preserved foods you can enjoy such as pickled onions and eggs, red cabbage, sauerkraut, jam, and chutney. What you may not realise about these foods is that they contain compounds called nitrates. Nitrates are known to cause carcinogenic effects on the body so these foods should be steered clear of while you undergo cancer treatment.
One of the main things you need to consider when you have cancer is giving the body the vitamins and minerals it needs. Dairy products, although containing a small amount of protein, won’t provide you with any minerals aside from calcium. Instead if you eat a lot of cheese and milk products you’ll fill the body with saturated fat that will be difficult to digest and get rid of. Make sure to keep dairy products to a minimum and try instead to focus on foods such as fruit, vegetables, and lean meats.
Cancer can be a difficult thing to live with, and treatment is often hard and costly. Help yourself this year and ensure you maintain a healthy and balanced diet to give your body the strength it needs.
