Broke & Fit: Blueberry-Raspberry Chia Seed Smoothie

Posted June 20, 2013 by in Health + Fitness

Chia seeds are easily my favorite superfood! Because these little seeds are so good for you, I almost always add them to my smoothies. You’ll honestly have no idea they’re in there.

Below is my favorite smoothie to make. It’s great for breakfast, a post-workout boost, or even a healthy dessert:

Makes two servings

What You’ll Need

  • A blender (obvi!)
  • 1/2 cup of ice
  • 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries
  • 1 banana
  • 2 tbs of chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup of plain fat-free yogurt
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein (I used soy)
  • 1 tbs of honey (optional)
  • 1 cup of milk ( I used regular soy)

Make it vegan by using agave instead of honey and soy yogurt. The one from Stonyfield is my favorite.

According to the USDA, a one ounce (28 grams) serving of chia seeds contains 9 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, 11 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein. The seeds also have 18% of the recommended daily intake of calcium, 27% phosphorus and 30% manganese. Yikes! If that didn’t convince you, this article will.
