Getting braces is an effective way to align teeth which are crooked or growing in improperly.  With enough patience, you will find yourself one day with perfect, pearly whites. However, in the meantime, you’ll have to ensure that you care for them properly in order to achieve your desired results.

Failing to take care of your braces could lead to a total disruption of the process and ultimately a waste of your money.  Therefore in order to get the most of your braces here is a list of the best ways to care for them:

Protect Them

If you engage in any sort of activity which risks hitting your mouth you should protect your teeth. That means wearing a mouthguard or helmet if you should make impact during an activity.

In some cases, you may decide to discontinue the activity altogether since you can cause serious injury with a metal apparatus attached to your teeth.

Only Use Orthodontist Approved Products

Following your appointment,  your orthodontist will give you a list of the best materials to use in your mouth.  It’s essential that you follow their list in order to ward off pesky bacteria which can lead to problems like cavities and gum disease.  

Your orthodontist will insist that you don’t use products which could damage or weaken your braces.  The idea is to keep your braces in perfect condition, so always follow your orthodontist’s instructions.

Brush Your Teeth With Extra Care

Brushing your teeth with braces is a different process.  Since you can easily damage a wire or bracket, it’s vital that you have a toothbrush which won’t harm the braces.

Make sure that you buy a soft brush as opposed to medium or hard.  When brushing, be sure to use a gentle pressure rather than vigorous movement.  Following brushing your teeth, you should rinse your mouth out thoroughly to remove any extra debris.  Since braces collect more food than your teeth alone, it’s essential to make sure that you leave no debris behind.

Floss Regularly

Flossing should still be a part of your dental care routine even with braces.  You’ll need floss which is specifically made for braces in order to avoid damaging them.  

Floss at least twice a day, being careful not to get the string caught on any of the brackets.

Eat a Sensible Diet

It’s vital that you eat foods which are recommended by your orthodontist.  You will receive a list following your appointment which will give you the foods that you should avoid at all costs.

These foods risk breaking the wires of your braces or dislodging brackets.  Some of the most common no-no foods are sticky candies, peanut butter, tough meat, any extremely crunchy foods like nuts.
