Naturally, you’ll want to stay outdoors longer when the weather is warm, but if you’re not careful, the sun can take a toll on your skin. The sun’s rays penetrate your skin, causing sunburn, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. As a result of dehydration, skin becomes dry, itchy and irritated. What can you do to protect your skin from the sun?

Limit Sun Exposure

The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays that damage your skin. These rays cause skin cancer, premature ageing, and other skin problems. When possible, stay indoors or in the shade during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s UV rays are strongest.

If you have to be outside, wear sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses. Ensure the sunscreen is SPF 30 or higher and offers both UVA and UVB protection. Choose one labelled broad-spectrum. 

But how do you get the tan you desire without frying your skin? Sunless tanning products are a great way to get a tan without exposing your skin. The best tanning lotion will give you a natural-looking tan without any orange hue. It will have a delightful fragrance, is lightweight and moisturizes the skin.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration makes skin dry, itchy, and irritated. You lose a lot of fluids when the sun is shining. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to stay hydrated. You can also take sports drinks, fruit juices, and herbal teas. 

Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which dehydrate more. If you’re feeling thirsty, drink. Always carry a bottle of water with you when you’re out in the sun. Make sure you’re taking atleast 2 litres of water every day but more when spending time outdoors or exercising.

Wear Protective Clothing

Protective clothing has a sun protection factor (SPF) that protects your skin from harmful rays. When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats. However, make sure the clothes are breathable, lightweight, and comfortable to enjoy your time outdoors. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that offer UV protection.

Exercise More

Exercising opens up your pores allowing you to sweat and remove toxins from your body. You’ll have fewer breakouts, and your skin will be less oily. Exercise also helps improve blood circulation, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. Plus, you’ll feel better and have more energy when you exercise regularly.

Choose an activity that you enjoy, so you’ll be more likely to stick with it. Swimming, biking, and hiking are great exercises to improve your skin health. When you exercise, drink plenty of fluids and take a break in the shade or indoors when you start feeling overheated.

Shower More Often

Because you’ll sweat more, shower more often when the weather is warm. Showering removes sweat and bacteria from your skin, reducing acne and other skin problems. Use a gentle, unscented soap and lukewarm water to wash your skin. Avoid scrubbing your skin too hard, which can irritate it. Pat your skin dry after showering, don’t rub it.

Apply a moisturizer while your skin is still damp to keep it hydrated. After a workout, take a shower and use a sports-specific body wash to remove sweat and bacteria. Avoid long and hot baths as they strip your skin of its natural oils. Add a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil to your bathtub to soothe and relax your skin.

Take Care of Any Skin Problems

If you’re experiencing any skin problems, such as dry skin, sunburn, acne, or wrinkles, there are many remedies that you can try. Sticking to a healthy, balanced diet will improve your skin health. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. 

Drink plenty of fluids and get enough sleep each night. Also, reduce stress levels as it can cause skin problems. Consult with your doctor if you’re experiencing any skin problems.
