In this day and age, we are told a lot about the importance of helping others. If we’re not giving to every charity, left, right, and center, we are considered arrogant, ignorant, or selfish. But sometimes we have to remember that the importance of helping others can be done in so many simple ways as well. Here are some ways for you to help your fellow human being today.
Make a Donation
There are so many different ways to donate to charities online. Right now, there are many people making Syria donations but you don’t need to directly donate to one charity if you don’t believe in the cause. Sometimes we can benefit more from donating to our local community and investing time in lieu of money and every little helps.
Stop to Help Someone
We can feel like we are constantly in a rush, but a simple act of kindness goes a long way. If somebody needs help putting their baby carrier down a flight of steps or someone has a flat tire, sometimes just stopping and asking how you can help can be enough for them. They may not need your help, but they may also need a helping hand that, in reality, will take a few minutes of your time. We can all feel like we’re rushing around way too much to even stop to help someone, but there’s always time to help a stranger.
Don’t Have Birthday or Christmas Gifts
We all like something for our birthday or Christmas, but if you’re at that point where you don’t need anything, if someone really wants to buy you something, ask them to make a donation to charity in your name. Redirecting gifts like this is such a simple thing, and the best thing is you don’t have to make a single bit of effort to reap the benefits.
Give a Hug
Sometimes giving someone a kind word, a helping hand, or a hug can go a long way. Lots of people feel like they need to keep their distance or it’s not like them to offer sympathy or empathy, but there’s always an opportunity to do this. And it’s an amazing way to increase that oxytocin and will no doubt make someone’s day. Likewise, if someone is depressed, sad, angry, or just need someone to listen, lending a sympathetic ear is more than enough to help someone through a difficult day. This could make all the difference, especially if they’re feeling like they’re not able to cope.
Make It Your Calling
If you want to do something more to help others, there’s value in making it a big part of your life. When we help others, we feel better in ourselves, but if we want to go one step further, we can start to find ways to make it our calling in life. Careers like healthcare are a good fit for people who want to help someone at any stage of their life.
There are many ways for us to feel like we can do something more. From the substantial to the subtle, there’s a lot we can do to help others.
