If you want to be a doctor, you’ll have to complete a medical degree. For other roles, a degree may simply be desirable and put you ahead of the competition when you’re applying for jobs.

It’s good to have some sort of experience in a relevant field under your belt before applying to a role. Sure, waitressing shows dedication, time, and commitment, but it doesn’t exemplify that you’ll know what you’re doing and require minimal training if you’re going into marketing, for example.
