Many people spend their entire professional lives in pursuit of a dream job. They want a career that is the perfect fit for their skills, talents, and interests. However, the journey to finding the right career is often full of unexpected twists and turns. The story of Vollmer Real Estate Investments CEO Max Vollmer shows that the right career path often shows up when you least expect it.
Max Vollmer grew up believing his calling was in the field of athletics. Despite growing up with asthma and being told by doctors that he would never become an athlete, he defied his diagnosis and built himself into a decathlete capable of competing at an international level.
Immigrating to the United States, Max soon proved himself as a top Division I college athlete for the University of Oregon. He was a multi-year First Team All-American and an indoor and outdoor PAC-12 champion. He was also ranked in the top five in the heptathlon and decathlon categories for a number of NCAA seasons. Max had found a purpose in pursuing both athletic and academic excellence at the University of Oregon, where he also met his wife, Kaitlin, who became his trusted confidant and future business partner.
Life was good for the couple until the unexpected happened. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept through the world, Kaitlin was unfortunately one of the many who lost their jobs almost overnight. WIth no government assistance and no fallback employment, Kaitlin and Max Vollmer needed to consider their options. Max was also legally prohibited from most forms of employment, due being on a student visa. They needed a unique solution to their problems, and that’s when they discovered real estate. Some forms of real estate were considered passive investments, which are legal under student visas. This made real estate the ideal industry for the Vollmers during the chaotic pandemic era.
Like many successful businesspeople, Max Vollmer found his career path as a matter of necessity, rather than through careful planning or childhood dreams. Intent on understanding the real estate field, Vollmer read online forums, watched videos, and even reached out to strangers with questions. Starting out with no network, no capital, and no experience in the field, he learned the fundamentals of the industry not through specialized training, but through relentless hours of personal research, trial and error, and persistence, he acquired the knowledge base necessary to become a major player in the real estate field. He did all of this while still being active as a full-time student and competing in athletic events.
“Every system, every relationship, every dollar of credibility was built from scratch,” Max described his early days in real estate. “What carried us through was not strategy alone. It was sustained belief paired with daily execution discipline.”
Over time, the demands of the growing business took increasing priority alongside Max’s athletic career. Competing at an elite level while running a real estate business was no longer sustainable. Vollmer had to make a choice. Taking the lessons he learned from athletics, he fully applied himself to being a real estate entrepreneur, using his mental and physical discipline to chase his new path to success.
To this day, Max holds no formal real estate certifications or professional designations. Instead, he has learned a great deal on the job. He has attended city zoning and planning meetings, studied municipal codes, worked alongside architects and engineers, and managed projects from first principles. All of these experiences have helped him transform his company from a wholesaling startup to a fully integrated construction and development company.
Max Vollmer’s success story teaches several lessons to professionals looking for their dream career. First, you might find the right career path when you aren’t looking for it. Things may not go the way you planned, but it might lead you to new opportunities that you never anticipated. Second, you don’t have to get a degree in a specific field to find success in it. Max Vollmer’s self-taught expertise in real estate shows that sometimes, the best way to learn an industry is through hands-on experience. With these lessons in mind, aspiring professionals can be open to the new possibilities that come their way.
