How To Change The Look Of a Room With Curtains

When decorating, it can be easy to overlook the impact windows make on the overall look. Usually, the thinking doesn’t go much further than finding a pair of curtains to match your decor.

Believe it or now, how you dress your windows can have a big effect on the overall look and feel of the room.

Curtains Can Make Your Room Smaller

When deciding what type of curtains to choose for your room, take into account the size of the room. A small room can look smaller if you choose dark, heavy fabrics. Not only do they draw attention to the walls, and therefore the size of the room, but they will also absorb light, making the room feel gloomy.

If you often choose curtains with the sole intent of using them to block light when shut, try a different approach.  Fitting a shutter or blind behind the curtain will give you the best of both worlds.  You can shut out the light when you need to without making the room look smaller.

Look around for a blind that fits your window perfectly for better light filtering the made to measure zebra blinds price can save you money while also ensuring a good fit that the light can’t get around.

Choose light fabrics in light and neutral colors. Stay away from strong patterns too.

How to Use Curtains to Make Your Room Look Bigger

You don’t have to skip curtains altogether in small rooms. To make the most of your space and trick the eye into believing the room is bigger use light-colored fabrics. The closer you can get to the color of the wall, the better.

By doing this, the eye sees one continuous wall, rather than one that has been broken up by curtain fabrics.

Use Longer Curtains to Give Your room Height

If you have low ceilings, you have to do what you can to make them seem less enclosing in the space. There are a few tricks you can use to make a room look bigger, such as making the ceiling the same color as the walls (if you’re using a light color), using mirrors, and using furniture that isn’t too tall.

You can use your curtains to make a room look taller too. Install your curtain rail as high as possible and use curtains, in a light fabric, that goes all the way to the floor. Again, the optical illusion.

Try Different Curtain Rails

It’s not just the curtains themselves that you can play around with to create different effects. It could also be worth switching out your curtain rail to see what impact this has.

There are many different curtain rod types that you can choose to help transform the look of your room. Choose wood for a rustic feel and designer metal for a more modern feel.

Ornate curtain rods can draw people’s attention upwards and could bring height to a room. Meanwhile, if you want a small window to seem wider, consider installing a curtain rod that is wider than the window – hanging the curtains so that they overlap the window but extend to the end of the rod will make it seem like you have a much wider window!

Experiment with Fabrics

Many people buy curtains in heavy fabrics because that’s what they’ve always done. Back in the days when old window panes were cold and draughty, they provided an extra level of warmth.

Now, that’s not a big of an issue and you can afford to choose fabrics for the way they look, rather than how warm they make your home. Look at floaty fabrics, voiles, and nets to really bring a touch of ethereal class to your room.

Who would have thought the humble curtain could have such a huge impact on your rooms? Next time you re-decorate, don’t forget your windows.
