If you have decided that you want to pop the big question to your partner soon, then congratulations already. The decision to want to marry someone is not an easy one to make; it takes a lot of time to muster up the courage to want to start actively looking for rings. Regardless of whether or not your partner is aware of your plan to propose, you should still be proud of yourself.

Now, there is a lot of pressure on people to buy extravagant and big engagement rings, and if you happen to have the resources and if that is something that both you and your partner want, then go for it. However, if you do not have the finances for it, or if you know that your partner does not like particularly big or fancy rings, then you can opt for a simpler and smaller design as well. It does not matter what people think because the only person that needs to like the ring is your partner, not everyone else.

Now that you are venturing into the world of ring buying, you are probably finding yourself struggling and in need of assistance, which is understandable. This is why we are going to walk you through the basics of choosing an engagement ring to try and make this process somewhat less stressful for you:

How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring for Your Partner

Choosing a Style of Engagement Ring

Choosing a style for your engagement ring can get stressful for a lot of people given how there are a variety of engagement ring styles. You can choose between classic styles to modern contemporary styles and even unconventional styles.

As a general rule of thumb, you should think about your partner’s personality and the way they choose to style and accessorize themselves.

You do not have to box yourself down to the same clichéd styles. You can even opt for a skull engagement ring or a nature-inspired engagement ring style as well. So, the best thing you can do is choose a style that complements your partner’s style.

Choosing a Gemstone

The next big question you need to consider is what type of stone you want for your ring. Diamonds are the traditional option, and they are still very popularly opted for by people today. Now, you can choose to have a diamond ring, or you can opt for another stone as well. Sapphires are a popular alternative for diamond rings and they happen to come in a variety of colors like pink, white, and yellow.

If you want, you can use other stones as well, as long as your partner likes the stone or is into the idea of alternative stones and weddings. So, you can opt for a diamond, or you can go a completely different route.

Some couples tend to choose stones that might represent certain important memories in the couple’s life or their partner’s life, so do not hesitate to personalize your gemstone if that is something you know your partner might appreciate more.

In case you have decided to opt for a diamond ring, then there are 4 things you need to look into, and there are called the 4Cs. The 4 Cs are the criteria based on which diamonds are graded and ranked.

Cut

The first C is known as the cut of the diamond. A diamond that has been cut properly, will not only look more beautiful, it will also be able to reflect and refract light better. Expert diamond cutters understand how light is supposed to move through a diamond to best determine its brilliance. So, the better the cut of the diamond, the more expensive it is going to be.

Color

The color of a diamond is also important. Color is imparted on a diamond because of trace impurities whilst the diamond was still in the crust. A color-free or less colored diamond will be considered purer and will have a better ability to reflect light.

Clarity

Another important C is clarity, and by clarity, we refer to how clear the diamond is. Sometimes diamonds will naturally have blemishes and inclusions, and this can also include structural imperfections, so foreign materials, feathers and so on.

Carats

Carats are the most important factor when we are talking about diamond so think of them as the overall weight of the diamond.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what it takes to buy a good engagement ring, you can now begin your search to find the perfect one for your partner. You do not have to choose one immediately, so do not feel pressured into buying a ring with the first shop you go to.  At the end of the day, as long as you and your partner are happy with your choice of ring, nothing else matters.
