Around 40 million people used tooth whiteners in the United States last year. Clearly, people around the country want a set of gleaming pearly whites. They’re willing to pay for them, and we can understand why. Wouldn’t most people prefer faultlessly white fangs over yellow-tinted ones? Unfortunately for us, staining and discoloration of teeth is a natural part of aging. It’s likely to happen to everyone to some degree.
Thankfully, there’s a lot you can do. Tooth whiteners are one example of a proactive approach. However, there are many even healthier and easier ways to do it. Keep reading to find out 5 of them:
- Visit the Dentist
Unsurprisingly, the dentist can help keep your teeth white. Make a habit of regularly scheduling a full check-up and clean. Unfortunately, fewer Americans than ever before are regularly seeing the dentist. However, attend at least once a year and you’ll enjoy the benefits of cleaner, whiter teeth, and better oral hygiene all around.
- Eat and Drink Sensibly
The food and drink you consume make all the difference to your teeth. Certain foods and beverages are particularly damaging in terms of discoloration. Coffee and red-wine are obvious examples of which you’re probably already aware.
There are many more though. Soda, tea, sugary foods, curries, berries, and certain spices can all contribute too. Eat and drink them in moderation to preserve the whiteness of your teeth.
Conversely, other foods can actually help. Crunchy fruits (like apples), high-calcium products, and raw onions are an example of stain-fighting foods to consume.
- Regularly Brush Teeth (and Use Baking Soda)
Clean your teeth twice a day. It’s an essential component of proper oral hygiene. We’re assuming you already know to do it! Brushing your teeth after eating or drinking stain-inducing products is especially important to whiter teeth. So after you enjoy that delicious turmeric latte, you may want to brush. Eat an apple or chew a piece of whitening gum (like Trident) if you don’t have a toothbrush handy.
Try brushing with baking soda too. The slight abrasive and alkaline-inducing qualities make it an effective stain remover. However, it takes time to work. Don’t expect instant results. Use roughly one part baking soda to two parts water. Brush with the paste created.
- Pull with Coconut Oil
Coconut oil pulling has been used for centuries in some cultures to improve oral hygiene. You can use most oils, but coconut oil packs a nice flavor, which helps proceedings! Scientific findings are lacking. However, there’s anecdotal evidence to suggest daily swilling of coconut oil in your mouth will brighten your smile (do so for up to 20 minutes)!
At the very least, you’ll fight the bacteria in your mouth.
- Use Apple Cider Vinegar
This vinegar is full of acetic acid. Known to kill bacteria, and commonly used as a cleaning product, you’ll be sure to whiten your teeth with it. Just don’t use it on the daily. The acid can erode the enamel that’s essential to tooth health.
