Going to the salon and getting the same haircut of hair coloring repeatedly can get mundane sometimes. Some people are comfortable looking the same, while others are a lot more adventurous and try out new and trending things that beauty salons and hair experts release onto the market every year. And why not?

When you’re looking around for a bit of a change and don’t want to go through lengths and hours of processes, but rather want something simple yet dramatic, the one thing that is the best recommendation is hair extensions. These can change any simple hairstyle into something lush!

Since the trend began a few years ago, back then the materials that were used were not the best kind, and most of them were made from human hair. However nowadays you get an array of different materials, colors, and textures to suit any kind of head.

Let’s step back for a second for those who are new to the concept:

What Are Hair Extensions?

These are exactly as per the name – they extend one’s hair to make it longer by various methods. The strands of “hair” are either synthetic or real hair and added to the natural hair on your head in a semi-permanent manner to add volume, depth, length, and everything nice.

The human hair is usually collected from those who willingly donate it to the salons when they go for a hair cut or shave their head off. Synthetic hair, on the other hand, is made from various materials such as fibers, and blends and are typically much finer than real hair versions and have plastic in them, that look exactly like natural human hair.

As you can imagine the real hair extensions, both look and feel like real hair, but the synthetic versions are not the same. Plus, the real hair can be treated like you would your own, with coloring and styling.

When deciding what the best one is for your preference or style, there are a few popular choices on the market which we will look at below.

Different Types of Hair Extensions to Choose From

Clip-On Extensions. These wefts or extensions come in various colored strands which are normally attached to the base of your scalp using silicone or fabric, they have special clips made for this purpose. It is a simple and quick process that combines with your hair and can easily come out and put back in via the clips.

Once you get them done at the salon and want to remove them and put them back in at a later stage or when washing your hair, various online resources can show you how to do this as well and if not, you can always schedule another session at the salon and ask the stylist to do them for you within 15 minutes.

It is good to know that it is not a permanent means of getting extensions, but they are convenient in terms of removing them and putting them back in. They also damage less than others mainly because they don’t need any chemicals or heat during their installation process, not to mention there is zero harm done to your hair either.

With this kind, if you look after them, they will last long. The average time they would last in this case is between 3 to 6 months.

Tape-In Hair Extensions. Also, a straight-forward process with these, it involves a pre-taped glue surface that is attached to both sides of your natural hair and uses a heating tool such as a straightener that heats the glue and secures it your hair.

When you get bored with them or want to get them removed, a special glue remover is used specifically for it. It is a slightly longer process for this kind of extension and can last anywhere up to 40 minutes per session, and sometimes an hour depending on the thickness of your hair and how many you want to be applied.

Once completed there are a few restrictions if you want these to last a long time. For instance, you cannot use normal conditioners or any other hair products such as hair spray or gels, as they can slip off or become lost.

Their life-span can be between 6 to 8 weeks if looked after and if continued use if needed, then you will need to get them removed and reapplied by the hair extensions specialists at the salons. This second time may be quicker than the first as the indicators of where to place the extensions will already be there. The advice of most hairdressers is to use specific types of shampoos and conditioners if you get this process done.

Besides that, they can be treated just like normal hair. You can style them as you want and because they are typically made from human hair, you can get them colored or curled too.

Weave or Sew-In types. Once your natural hair is braided into cornrows, then a needle and thread are used to sew the hair pieces in between and into the braids. Those that have thicker hair are usually recommended to use this kind of extensions as there is more to work with, however, this can take a couple of hours to complete so if you are opting for this, make sure you have the time to sit through it.

Also, another reason people with thin hair should not get this done is that it may put a strain on the hair and does weight it down considerably. It is slightly more technical than the others and as such only an expert can do this for you meticulously. If you’re looking for something a bit more holistic, opting for the wig version of this is also viable, as it’s the same process of sewing but rather using a wig instead of individual wefts.

Hopefully, the above information will help you decide which one you like and help you along the way to the hairdressers
