Getting tired of your clothes? Want to make your everyday outfits more fun? Want to kick-off the fall season with a more fashionable wardrobe? If so, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed since shopping, even at the cheaper stores can add up.
In reality, you may not need to do much shopping at all — if any. Perhaps everything you need to re-vamp your style is already in your closet?
Below, Nydia of A Girl Named Nydia shares her four favorite ways to upgrade an outfit. With her help, your outfits will look way more interesting with little to no card swiping at your favorite store.
1. Mix Prints & Textures
This may be the trickiest one of the four. It can go totally right or be a complete disaster. Either way, just take the risk!
When mixing, stick to a color palette of no more than three colors. Start with neutrals so you can get the hang of it. Also, choose prints that don’t fight with one another. For example, leopard and stripes usually look awesome together!
- Top: $50 via Zara (similar)
- Pants: $15.80 via Forever 21 (similar)
- Necklace: $38 Baublebar (similar)
- Shoes: $60 via Zara

2. Frost Yourself with Accessories
Make your favorite monotone outfit pop with awesome arm candy or with my personal favorite… a big beautiful statement necklace. If your prefer smaller pieces, consider wearing multiple rings on your hands.
I’m also a hat lover and I wish I had a huge collection of them. But I have my basics such as a black fedora hat for a boho style, and a bowler hat for a vintage feel.
Here’s a tip: Hats a great for hiding bad hair days!
- Hat: $27 via Pacsun
- Dress: $28 via Brandy Melville
- Kimono: $53 via Pacsun
- Boots: via ShoeDazzle
3. Add Color
Don’t be afraid to wear bold colors! If you’re wearing a pair of boyfriend jeans and a simple graphic tee, a splash of color will definitely change the vibe of your entire outfit.
Instead of buying new clothes filled with color, just add vibrant lipstick to your look or carry a bright bag.
4. Layer it, Girl!
There’s something about adding a layer to an outfit that makes it more complete and chic. For the outfit below, I wore a crop top with scalloped shorts. Once I looked in the mirror, I felt incomplete. By adding a black boyfriend blazer and my cool man shoes (I know, I like weird shoes) it was a quick transformation.
These are not rules, just suggestions based upon my preferences. You can always style and match however you like! I can easily wear prints, a hat, and statement jewelry all in a same look. Go simple or go overboard, it doesn’t matter. Just express yourself, stay inspired and be creative!
