Memorial Day Weekend is officially here! To honor our fallen soldiers, it’s common to get invited to a cookout or to go away for the long weekend. However, a weekend away can get pricey fast, and hosting a cookout isn’t cheap either…more on that later…

If you’re not able to get away this weekend, don’t fret, there are still ways to enjoy the long weekend without a roadtrip or a flight. Below are some quick (and cheap) things you can do to enjoy Memorial Day and the unofficial summer kickoff:

Go on a Picnic

Head to the grocery store, pick up some meat and cheese, or sushi, and have a little picnic in a park with friends or family. You could also pick up your favorite fast food meal instead if that’s more your vibe. McDonalds or Popeye’s in the park sounds fun to me!

Go to the Closest Beach, Lake, or River

If the weather allows for it, consider heading to your closest beach, lake, or river to get your tan on.

Go to a Botanical Garden

If your area has a botanical garden, consider going on a long stroll through all the flowers. I live near the Huntington Library and Botanical Garden in San Marino, CA, and I try to walk through it at least twice a year.

Have a Movie Marathon Day

If you don’t want to deal with traffic, consider enjoying a movie marathon in the comfort of your own home. Get pizza delivery and binge on a solid movie series such as X-Men, Planet of the Apes (there’s a new one out), Harry Potter, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, Fast and the Furious, Mission Impossible, or The Matrix, just to name a few.

Go See a Movie in Theaters

If the weather is gloomy for you this Memorial Day Weekend, but you still want to get out of the house, consider going to the movies to see either IF or the new Planet of the Apes movie.

Go on a Long Bike Ride

If you own a bike, or live in a place where you can easily rent one, consider going on a long bike ride with friends.

Invite People Over for a Potluck

There are two types of people in this world. Those that like to cook, and those that hate to cook. If you are the later, host a potluck with your friends this upcoming weekend. Hosting a potluck is also a much more affordable way to host friends since everyone needs to bring a dish, instead of you being the sole provider.

Have a Self-Care Day

Who says you have to spend Memorial Day weekend being social? If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet, consider reading a book for the entire day or journaling in the park.
