The Best (and Cheapest) Places to Go Shopping in Soho, NYC

Posted March 16, 2015 by in Fashion

The Soho neighborhood of Manhattan is a well-known shopping destination, but it can easily break the bank. Sure, window shopping at stores like Chanel, Miu Miu, Prada, Ted Baker, and Free People can be fun, but not if you actually want to add new things to your wardrobe. And even budget-friendly retailer, Topshop, isn’t that budget-friendly.

Soho is of course filled with budget-friendly retailers like Forever 21, H&M, and Express, but those are typically located all over the United States. On a trip to New York, no one wants to go to the places they can visit at home. Right? That would be the same as going to Hawaii, and not trying Kona Coffee!

Below are Broke and Chic’s favorite places to shop in Soho. These shops are unique, and they definitely won’t break the bank.

1. Mystique Boutique

If you’re walking South on Broadway, Mystic Boutique will most likely be your first stop (after Forever 21 and H&M, of course). Everything at this store is on-trend, and under $30. You’ll see lots of denim, kimonos, shoes, and accessories — plus great sales. They actually have a whole floor dedicated to sale items.

They also have an online shop, so you can shop even after you leave NYC.

2. Necessary Clothing

If you love testing the waters with new trends, you’ll love Necessary Clothing. There are two massive locations in Soho, and each one is filled to the brim with everything hip, cool and trendy: faux leather jackets, Valentino look-a-likes, pumps, lace-up boots, club dresses, formal dresses, indie chic dresses; you name it!

My only complaints are the crazy long lines and (sometimes) weird dressing room rules. Don’t live in New York City? Just order online, you won’t regret it!

3. Pearl River Market

Take a break from clothes shopping and check out Pearl River Market. This massive shop has affordable decor items (like lanterns and lamps), unique kitchen items, Asian treats, and retro toys. They also have a bathroom on their lower level — definitely a rare find in Soho.

Pearl River Market also has great items for kids. For additional reading on kids items, consider searching Yelp for kid friendly boutiques.

4. Glossier

If you have been crushin’ on this cult favorite brand for a long time, or you have only been able to order online, stop by their New York City flagship store. Yes, Glossier has a stunning shop in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan. No trip to Soho will ever be complete until you stop by Glossier. The likelihood of a line when you arrive is pretty likely, but don’t worry, it goes by quickly.

5. Muji

This store is basically Japan’s version of Ikea. You’ll find stationary, modern furniture, chic storage options, clothing, bathroom essentials, kitchen trinkets, and skincare. Muji actually has locations all over the world, but they tend to only be in major cities. So if you’ve never been to one, take advantage of the opportunity.

6. Amsterdam Boutique

This store is located across the street from the extremely large Necessary Clothing, and only a few storefronts from Aquamar. Come here if you’re looking for shoes, blazers, body-con dresses, and statement pieces.

My only complaint about this shop is that it’s cramped, and you aren’t allowed to try on sale items. If you’re looking to open a boutique or retail store yourself, you can find wholesale women’s clothing at Rosio.

7. Uniqlo

Uniqlo is a chain, but like Muji, it’s only in major cities. Come here for basics and necessities like jackets, jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts. They also have a large men’s section!

8. e.l.f. Studio

Okay, so this is technically in Noho — not Soho, but it’s only a ten minute walk and if you love e.l.f. Cosmetics, you can’t not stop by. You’ll literally be able to buy all new makeup with the help of makeup artists WITHOUT breaking the bank. Take that Sephora!

9. The Ordinary

If you love the skincare products from The Ordinary, then you must stop at their shop. You’ll be able to get a skin consultation so you can be confident with your skincare purchases. The best thing about The Ordinary is the price point. You’re able to get high quality skincare products far less than what you could ever find at a department store.

If you have a long layover in NYC, but not long enough that you would want to stay a night in the city, consider Vertoe’s luggage storage JFK. That way you won’t have to lug your bags around.
