Finding a good car on a budget can be hard, especially when you want to keep maintenance costs down and want to be sure you can rely on it not to break down when you need it most.
The following cars are excellent at reliability and will not cost too much to buy if you buy pre-owned:
The Genesis used to be Hyundai’s best-seller, which is why you can find so many used models available for such reasonable prices. A Genesis from 10 years ago will put you back about $7,000, and it is an excellent price for an unexpectedly luxurious model.
It’s very reliable and offers rear-wheel drive with either 290 horsepower or a 368 horsepower V8. These cars also have a great audio system, as well as heated leather seats.
Not all GMC Yukon’s are made equal; the models from 2005-2007 are exceptionally reliable, though, and incredibly affordable. If you’re looking for Calgary SUVs, you can pick up a 2006 Yukon XL for about $8,000, with a grey leather interior.
These cars can seat as many as 9 people and can be equipped to tow up to 8500lb, which means they’re an excellent car for an efficient ride.
The Toyota Prius has an incredibly low maintenance cost and is a high-mileage hybrid that has almost perfect reliability. If you have a Prius, you can have it for 10 years and never experience a problem.
It only has 98 horsepower but has brilliant fuel economy and is EPA-rated to achieve 48 mpg on the highway and 51 mpg in the city. It’s safe, and older models can be affordable and under $10,000.
Mazda MX-5 Miata
The Miata is excellently engineered and won’t break the bank – you can find a 10-year-old model for $10,000 or less. It’s probably the most affordable sports car you can get, which comes at the price of a small cabin and trunk. It has a 167-horsepower engine, which is plenty as it’s such a light and nimble car. It’s also got excellent fuel economy for a car of its kind.
Miata’s come with power windows and air conditioning, and more expensive models have leather upholstery and upgraded sound systems. They are also notoriously fun to drive.
The Acura TL can comfortably seat 5 people and comes with 280 horsepower as a minimum. It feels luxurious, with leather seats, Bluetooth phone connectivity (even in a 2009 model), a rearview camera, a good stereo, and in-built navigation.
A 10-year-old Acura TL will put you back about $10,000, but you won’t regret it for a second.
An A6 will only be affordable if it’s at least 10 years old when it hits the $10k mark, but if you can find one, you’ll fall in love. They have a lovely interior and exterior with an all-wheel drive and excellent reliability.
They’re a great luxury midsize car with a sunroof, leather upholstery, and a 10-speaker audio system with many more add-ons.
