As far as hair loss solutions go, women have quite a few options particularly when it comes to hairpieces. Two of the most popular and widely-accepted methods are women’s human hair wigs and hair extensions. But how do they differ and in what situation is it more suitable for you to purchase a wig as opposed to hair extensions and vice versa? This blog will explain everything you need to know in the wigs vs. hair extensions debate.

What Are Wigs?
Wigs are hairpieces that are designed to cover the full head and provide lengthy hair. They come in either synthetic hair, which is artificial hair designed to mimic natural hair, or real human hair. While wigs are commonly mistaken for toupees, they are actually designed more for women to wear.
This is because toupees traditionally cover the main balding areas which men with male pattern baldness are affected by. The hair on the sides and the back of the head usually remain which is then blended with the toupee. Wigs, meanwhile, cover the full scalp and are ideal for those who are dealing with complete or total hair loss on their head. Additionally, women with no hair loss can also wear wigs as it’s a measure to protect their natural hair while experimenting with new looks and hairstyles.
With that said, men can still wear full cap wigs if they are dealing with total hair loss with no hair on the sides or back of their heads. They can also wear them if they simply prefer to have more hair to work with or a long hairstyle.
What Are Hair Extensions?
Hair extensions are integrations that are meant to be blended with one’s natural hair. They provide volume, length and density to the wearer’s existing hair. They come in either synthetic hair, which is artificial hair designed to mimic natural hair, or real human hair.
There are many different types of hair extensions ranging from tape-ins, clip-ins, u-tips, i-tips, halo, wavy hair extensions and much more. All these extension types help achieve the same goal, but differ in installation methods, durability, suitability with types of hair and frequency of use.
What Are the Main Differences Between Wigs and Hair Extensions?
So what are the differences between the two? For one, wigs cover the full scalp while hair extensions are usually attached to the back of the head onto the wearer’s real hair. Additionally, you don’t need to have hair to wear a wig while even with the best human hair extensions, you will need at least a few inches of hair for them to blend.
Wigs can also be attached by the wearer with ease. Certain types of hair extensions can also be attached by the wearer such as tape-ins or halo hair extensions, but for most of them, they require the services of a salon or professional which can be time consuming and not to mention, expensive. Lastly, wigs — especially human hair wigs — can last much longer without needing to be replaced as much if maintained and taken care of properly. Extensions, on the other hand, while longlasting in their own right, will need to be replaced or reinstalled within a few months as they are attached to your natural hair. As a result, as your natural hair grows, the extensions will move out of place and will require reinstallation.
When Should I Get a Wig?
If you are dealing with total hair loss or are at an advanced stage of hair loss, a wig is suitable for you. Even if you have a little hair left, you can simply wear a wig cap before installing the wig and having a full head of hair again. Alternatively, if you’re interested in using heat styling products, dyeing your hair or simply trying an ambitious hairstyle, you can also make use of wigs in order to protect your natural hair.
When Should I Get Hair Extensions?
If you are struggling to grow your hair beyond a certain point or simply require instant length and volume for a certain occasion or hairstyle, hair extensions will be beneficial for you. For example, if you’re having your wedding or attending a special event, you can use clip-in hair extensions — meant for daily use — to help you achieve a lavish and luxurious look. Once you’re done, you can simply take them off at the end of the day. With that said, if you prefer a more semi-permanent look, there are extension types such as u-tip hair extensions that can last a while before needing to be replaced.
Hopefully, you now not only know what wigs and hair extensions are along with their differences, but also know which one is suitable for you depending on your particular hair loss stage.
