When you think about a vacation, the chances are you don’t think about school. Instead, you likely dream about lazy, long beach days and exciting waterparks.
That doesn’t mean vacations must be devoid of all education, though. In reality, they are the ideal opportunity to get your kid excited about learning! You just need to handpick the right places. Here are some excellent educational vacation destinations to take your kids to this summer.
South Africa
South Africa is an enormous country in the African continent, meaning it has a lot of educational benefits. It’s a particularly perfect spot to take kids who are keen on animals. South Africa has a rich and diverse array of wildlife, including the big five (lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and African buffalo). To experience all that – and more – consider staying in a lodge at Kruger National Park, which offers plenty of great safaris. These Family Safaris Kruger won’t only ensure your family sees the best of African wildlife, but you’ll also get an education into the animals themselves while you’re out there. Your kids will fall silent as soon as they spot their first wild lion!
Italy
Thanks to its pizza, pasta, beautiful landscapes, and historical cities, Italy is the perfect vacation destination for adults and kids alike. It’s especially great for teaching your kids about history. Head to the iconic city of Rome, where your kids can see the Colosseum and learn about the gladiator fights that happened there thousands of years ago. While in Rome, you can also head to the Pantheon, where your kids will encounter a beautifully preserved monument full of rich and interesting history.
Venice is another great city for historical education. You can teach your kids about how Venice was built on water, including the mythological origin story. There’s plenty more history to encounter in Venice, too, including the beautiful Saint Mark’s Basilica, into which Mark’s corpse had to be smuggled!
Egypt
Another wonderful country for historical education is Egypt. Its ancient history is rich; you can tell your little one about the importance of the River Nile to Egypt’s civilization, how ancient Egyptians worshiped cats, and stories about the ancient pharaohs who got buried in the pyramids. These exciting stories can then be backed up with trips to the pyramids and museums! Don’t forget to witness the incredible great pyramids of Giza and the grand Egyptian museum (which holds hundreds of Tutankhamun treasures).
France
A trip to France can be very educational for both kids and grown-ups! If your kids are interested in creative expression, head to Paris, where you’ll find the Louvre (home to the Mona Lisa) and the Musee d’Orsay. While there, you can also visit Notre Dame and – if your kids don’t get creeped out too easily – the underground catacombs, which hold millions of remains.
Outside of Paris, France holds an education in war. You can visit the WW1 trenches in Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, which will give your kids a chance to see what the war would have really been like. It’s a very enlightening and sobering trip and might make a future war historian out of your little one!
