  • Look within yourself. If you want to determine what your career path should be, you need to examine yourself closely. What is it you enjoy learning about? What is it you can picture yourself doing every single day and not get sick of it? What would you get out of going back to school and retraining into something else? This is an important thing to ask yourself because once you go back, you’re going to be pushing your passions forward.
  • Understand what motivates you. You decide to go back to school at the age of 35, So what is it that’s motivating you to get there? Is it money? Is it the fact that your career hasn’t panned out the way that you thought it would? Is it because you need some more flexibility or you just want a challenge? No matter what it is, the career that you pick for yourself is really going to be dependent on who you are at this particular stage in life. If you can understand what motivates you, you’re going to be able to push forward with it.
  • Consider the long term goals. What does your future look like to you? What does your life look like and what goals are you going to put in place for you to achieve that? The list that you put together can really help you to approach your career search more clearly. Perhaps the career search you have in mind is similar to what you are currently doing, but you’re just pivoting away from your current path onto another one that takes you higher. Maybe the career path you want takes you back to school and you have to redo a new degree or a new masters all over again to qualify in what you are hoping to qualify in. Regardless you have to look ahead and think about the long term goals and how your newfound aspiration effects you.
