Taking care of your skin, no matter what age you are, is the single best investment you can make in your personal care. More than any other aspect of our appearance, skin comes to reflect the lifestyle that we lead, and the care that we put into our bodies and health.
Appearance is just one part of this skin-deep truth – skin is also the body’s first line of defense against unwanted environmental pollutants. We tend to take it for granted, especially when we’re younger, but if we don’t take proper care of it, it can become sensitive, irritated and show our age much faster. The way we look is a very visible incentive to take care of our skin, but there are also some very good other reasons we should prioritize skin health and a great skincare routine.
Skin Means Protection
When skin gets dehydrated, the cells that make up the dermis and epidermis become dried out and very brittle. It no longer does as good a job as a barrier against irritants and environmental pollutants, which means it’s condition will deteriorate fast, and you may find your skin becomes super sensitive and inflamed.
Inflammation in turn leads to accelerated aging. When skin becomes irritated, you can choose products with a variety of ingredients known to be soothing and anti-inflammatory – pure rosewater, colloidal oatmeal or even cbd oil are cropping up in skincare designed to calm. If skin cells are irritated, they also become less efficient at storing nutrients, and will fail to function properly.
Cared For Skin Feels Great
As the condition of our skin is so visible to others, it can have an enormous impact on our sense of wellbeing and self-esteem if it isn’t in good condition. It doesn’t work to simply cover problems up with thick layers of makeup – this often looks even worse, and will damage the condition of the skin further over time.
Put in place a simple routine of a great quality cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer with an ingredient like Hyaluronic Acid that will keep skin hydrated all day. Then you can start to layer in specific treatments for skin concerns you have like acne, aging or dullness.
Remedying The Aging Process
Getting older is a fact of life, and it’s something that should be embraced, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t want to look the best you can at any age, and skin is a huge factor in this. Dehydrated skin ages a lot faster, so make sure you’re plumping it up by drinking lots of water. Exfoliation should also be a regular part of your routine to encourage cell turnover and help the absorption of your skincare products by gently removing dead skin cell, but make sure you don’t overdo it.
A facial exfoliator once or twice a week is plenty to keep skin looking good without causing irritation. Aside from genetics, lifestyle factors are a major cause of how good our skin looks as we get older. Avoiding too much sugar and refined carbs in our diets isn’t just good for our waistlines, it also prevents a process called glycation in the skin which triggers lines and wrinkles.
Wearing a high quality broad spectrum SPF every day is also an absolute must to protect yourself from sun damage which can cause aging and illness.
